10 inches and counting. Currently about 8" per hour falling.
We had that 3 weeks ago, and 90% of the snow is still on the ground.
i salted the shit out of the driveway -- it's on an incline -- and it's holding. 25 lbs of salt.. i'll go do more later, i just can't believe the volume!
Kinda looks like my house!

45 minutes of aggressive shoveling and the jeep is free as are all important paths. No need to climb on the stairmaster today. Street has yet to be plowed, but unlikely that will happen before late tomorrow at the earliest I'm guessing.
It's heading our way. We're on the coast and they are expecting 8-14" of accumulation. That's a lot for us...
reminds me of a few years ago when we got like 3ft of snow in March or April.

Yep I'm in that area too - couple feet on the ground and still going. This area just isn't prepaired for it like WI would be. Not enough plows or people who know how to handle the snow. It's all about scale and DC isn't scaled for it. When I lived in the CO mountains this would be a daybto celebrate the awsome skiing for tomorrow
A buddy of mine has a XT225 and puts sheet metal screws in his tires every winter!

I miss big snowstorms in the mid-Atlantic -- every few years, DC would find itself on the seam between an Arctic air mass and a big wet storm blowing up from the Gulf. I was there for a similar storm in the late '80s. We spent the day skiing up and down the Capitol Mall, and then stopped off at the greenhouse of the National Botanical Gardens (which was open!!!) and kicked off our skis to step through the doors into the palms and cacti of the tropics.
That, and I miss the '73 LandCruiser with chains for all four corners...

I miss snows like that. When I lived in Flagstaff, 24" wouldn't even slow anything down, but they had to deal with that many times a winter. DC not so much....
Days like this make we wish I hadn't got rid of my x-country skis.......

VA DOT is actually doing a great job with the plows. They got smart(er) and bought a lot of truck-sized plows and are putting them on county vehicles, mostly F250s for the smaller areas.
Still, this is some huge shit. Biggest snowfall in 80 years? or ever, they are saying. I mean, it's been snowing since ~8 pm last night here.. JEEZ ENOUGH ALREADY. WE GET THE POINT, AL GORE IS COMING TO TOWN

we're at just over 11" now. :(
Supposed to be in the 50's tomorrow.
Meeting some friends for lunch, and seeing Avatar.
Might just have to go on 2 wheels.
I came up to the D.C. area Thursday afternoon,to help my parents with shoveling, and see the folks before X-mas made the trip a nightmare.
Snow started here about 8:30 Friday night, and just kept going. This really was/is the energizer bunny of snowstorms.
Before I went to sleep last night, I put a yardstick out against a bush about 5' from the front door.
This was about 3:00pm today:

Glad I brought the truck.

It's still snowing, but it's been tapering off for about an hour now. I think it's about over. Tomorrow comes the digging out and driving back to Norfolk, where we don't get any snow.
Oh yeah,
Couldn't believe some of the names the news anchors were coming up with for the storm
"The shopper stopper"
"Blizzilla"
"The Christmas crippler"
etc.
Best plow trucks have the scraper blades underneath.
Unfortunately, they make the beast with two backs up the roads morel
just wait til you get a good rain in to wash away the salt and shit they lay down.
You can get in some short rides to keep the bikes current
:'( I miss Colorado. 9 monthes of the year I could care less where I live, but in the winter I want snow. Frickin' Albuquerque. >:(

geez do i miss living in socal. this snow here in va sucks.
all i have to say is that my back is killing me today from all the shoveling yesterday.
anyone that says "oh snow is great, its great to have a white xmas" obviously has never shoveled 16 inches of snow throughout the day, and has severely forgotten how bad roads are in snow, walkways with ice are dangerous and everything else.
i hate people that say "snow is great" bs!!! >:( socal has no snow and guess what, its great. best xmas day 65f outside and shorts and tshirt to go mountainbiking, what more can you ask for?

we just shoveled out the drive and the garage so i cna get the bike out.
the guy who lives across the street and parks in front of my house shoveled his cars out onto my driveway and sidewalk.
i could help but to shovel the snow right back in front of his cars. he's gonna have to be good at parallel parking to get out without raming the g35 through the snow. :)
i make the beast with two backsing hate snow.
kath and i got into an argument that ended with me saying "i'm packing my shit and moving with or without you" in regards to snow and this area. [laugh]

Community mailbox takes care of that. I live on a private street and we have a contracted snowplow driver. He had been here 3 times before 6am this morning, but didn't show up again until after 4pm. The height of the snowfall here was about 630, so there was quite a bit of snow on the ground after his last job. Also, he plowed about 18" away from the curb on both sides of the street, only leaving enough room for one car to go down the street at a time....

Impressions-
Spoke to my brother out on eastern Long Island Sunday and he said he got 27". Neighbor with a Bobcat cleared his driveway.
We're in ["frickin", per Scottish] Albuquerque, where the low 50's, sunny weather allow riding the Monster. I'm always amazed when I see guys in shorts and t-shirts here on these December days.
The guy staying at our house on Long Island called yesterday to complain that he was snowed in. The driveway is about 100' long and on a side hill, so the snow often drifts over it at about 4'. I will point out to him that Barbara and I shovel it out ourselves every time it snows, and we're in our mid-60's. Wimp...
Spoke to a business acquaintance in Florida this morning who complained about the "freezing" temperatures (mid-50's). He said he was working at home because it was "too cold to go out."

some people nowadays are just goddam pussies.
the winter before i moved up to PA from AL, i remember being bundled up and shivering uncontrollably in the high 40's

it's the nipple muscles (men only)
exposure to cold builds up the nipple muscles. warm weather people have girlie nipple muscles, and are not able to take the cold. their teats hurt.
cold weather folks have acclimated by building up the nipple muscle.
this only applies to men, women have stronger nipple muscle (and an extra layer of belly fat) to deal with cold, but they can get cold pain too.

Here's my snow pics. Normally, we don't see more than 6"-8" in a "big" snow. We wound up with 12"+ inches here in WNC. People forget how to drive here too when more than 4 flakes fall.
Timeline:
Friday, 1PM. Power goes off. Eh, not a big deal, we'll report it (1st one from my area to report it) and baby-sit the fire until it's cool enough to leave without the blower going.
Friday 2PM: Time to do what good ol' boys do when it's snowing and the power is out. Lets go play in the snow.
Heading up to the local 4-wheeling/muddin' place, we find some snow.

Climbing up the hill in the above pic, we find a very snowy camping spot. My Dakota loves snow.

Friday 4PM. Went to KMart for some cheap ski-type gloves for C. Power went off before we could check out. We got to watch pine trees rest on the lines and watch a transformer go through its death throes.
At home, looking at the table at the firepit:

Friday 6PM: We decide power isn't coming on anytime soon and head out for something hot to eat. Wal-Mart and Huddle House are the only places with power and open. Driving to that side of town was an adventure. We're driving on snowpack and watching the green blast of light from transformers blowing all around us. It was like being in a SCI-FI horror flick. We even watched a guy in a Tahoe blow his front hubs from getting tangled in a downed line. After waiting for 40 minutes for a sub at a Subway with rapidly dwindling stores and listening to a road grader & Bobcat try to stay ahead of the rapidly accumulating snow in the Wal-Mart parking lot, we head home. No real incidents, but 4WD and good ground clearance was a necessity.
A heavily traveled secondary road near our house:

Friday 9PM, no power, might as well go to bed and rest well.
Saturday, 9AM. Sun is shining in spurts, but another three inches of snow is in the forecast. Time to walk the neighborhood. All is still, folks are still inside, not sure what we're doing out and about with a camera.
Over at the neighbors across the street:
Neighbor's spruce trees:

That's measured right outside the door, on the porch. We probably got a bit more, maybe 14" but the heat from the house melted a bit of the accumulation:

Saturday 10:00AM. Still no power, so off C and I go to play in the snow a bit more. We're headed for the Blue Ridge Parkway. We finally get there after working our way past multiple out-of-state (mostly Florida plates) stuck heading up the mountain.
The Dakota, once again after, taking us as far as the USFS allowed us to go:

It was really quiet and silent up here:

Seems I was the only one to actually drive to the barricade

Yup, still closed:

US19 across Soco Gap. That's the Blue Ridge Parkway overpass crossing the road.

Saturday, 12:30PM. C and I pull the 2nd of the two subs bought at Subway the night before out for lunch. Still no power. We also put a couple cans of Beanie-Weenies in the coals in the wood stove to heat up for a side to go with our sub.
Same table as the earlier shot, but with about another 1.5" in snow:

Saturday 3:30PM: I've finished clearing the driveway so I don't need 4WD to get in and out of our 50' driveway. C and I are talking about heading to her parents' place that still has power so we can shower. As I'm prepping the wood stove to leave it, the power comes back on.
Sunday 8:00AM: I had heard a sound in the night that sounded a bit like a Bradford Pear falling into a deep snow.
Seems the sound I heard was spot on. Here's my Bradford Pear. It's in my pond, my neighbor's yard behind the yard, and my neighbor's yard beside the yard.

Turns out, we did well. Just a bit down the road, there was a tree on a house, and a tree on a car. I have a busted Bradford Pear.
I also have a chair full of snow.

Monday, 10:30AM: I visit my parents who live about 20 minutes away.
This is my parent's driveway:

There's my 2009 Blizzard adventure for those interested. [thumbsup]
JM
i only have one question, when did you steal my truck and return it ??? i got pretty much the same dakota only sucky thing is that mine is only 2wd so i would have been stuck [bang]
Yea, you'd have been *really* stuck in a 2WD. We went places I wasn't sure a stocker Dakota could go. I really like my 4.7.
JM
Awesome picts, JM.
Sorry to hear about your pear, :'(
I wish we would get some snow like that. The quiet in the woods with fresh fallen snow is something special.
>sigh< whenever I see a Dodge Dakota, I think about the Jeep Comanche it replaced and cry a little..
20 year old, >100k mile Comanches are getting better than 5 grand these days..

Hey Ive got a snowblower you can borr....ohhhhh.....not no mo.
My thumb hurts from pushing snow with the ATV if that makes you feel any better. [thumbsup]
The snowblower wouldn't start at Zooom's house - 3 of us spend hours shoveling his driveway and then mine. We could have used the ATV - next time we're walking to your house.
You guys didn't have any starter spray? I keep that stuff around by the case. Fun at parties too.

The ATV is the bomb with this snow. Plowed 2, 1/4 mile long driveways and probably a mile worth of sidewalks yesterday. Plowing while it was coming down wasnt fun. Call me next time you need a good plowing!
Starter fluid is my friend for the post hiatus fire up. After that, starts like a champ!
