Title: What to do for a scuf on a doggie paw?
Post by: red baron on December 21, 2009, 06:21:42 PM
Well the spaz managed to scuff her rear paw pad somehow. No bleeding or that, just a little raw spot about 4mm in diameter.

There's cremes at the pet store but does she need it?

What to do?

I saw a thing on dirty jobs where the were rubbing in used motor oil  into the worn calloused part of camels knees and chest pad

Does she need it? No. But keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected.

But the question is: Does he want anymore Vaseline on the floor than he already has?

It depends on the on how deep the scrape is and how the paw is "handling" it. One way to tell if the paw smells like corn chips.

Srsly, does it smell like corn chips?

Not sure what type of vet deal you have, but both our dogs are on wellness plans with Banfield (in Petsmarts at select locations) and office visits are free of charge.

If you have that, take your pooch in there.

If not........I'd put some neosporin on it, gauze and tape.

If you have an old cone from a previous procedure, that might help.

Definitely want to keep it sterile while outside.

If you don't have the cash, I'd be willing to throw you some for a vet visit to get it checked out.

Banfield rocks.

We pay around 23-27/mo for each of our dogs (ankle biter and doberman).

That fee per month includes all office visits (expected or unexpected), shots, exams, and teeth cleanings.

We just had each of them in for their comprehensive which includes about 4 pages worth of shit, including teeth cleaning.

Retail price on that is around 1200$ per their pricing, which is about right.

Typical Vet is 45$ in the door and about 400$ for a teeth cleaning, throw in all the shots and bloodwork and you are close.

We checked out the vets before we joined up. All of them are Ohio State Vet Grads, which is a good vet school.

I think it is a cost effective plan for our animals. Some might disagree, but in our opinion, it is.

I have compared my yearly cost compared to what my Mom (just has a vet) pays per year in visits, shots, etc.

Totally am whooping her ass on cost savings. Plus the paperwork is so detailed, it is good for our records.

sorry for the extended advertisement for Banfield, I am not employed by them, just like their service and my Vet there.

Keep your pooches paw clean and you should be good.

What caused the scuff?

If the wound is at all open (e.g. possibility of infection) then the best thing to do is to soak it for a few minutes every few hours in iodine solution diluted into very warm water.

If it's not, just sore, then you can just put some ointment on to keep it from getting too raw/irritated and make sure that she doesn't lick at it.  I used to use Bag Balm but Vaseline would work too.  Don't put Vaseline on if the wound is open though.

(BTW I'm very familiar with pad injuries from our old lure coursing days, feel free to PM me too.)

+3 now.

All of my dogs have done the same thing at one point or another, with varying degrees of severity. It heals fairly quickly.

If it's really bad you can stick a sock on their foot (they love that  [evil])...but your pups doesn't sound that bad. I'd just leave it alone.

I treat my dogs like if I had kids.

If that had an issue, they go to the doctor.

Just must be me.

You would take your kid to the doctor if they scuffed their knee, and it didn't bleed?

I don't think he needs to worry about that anymore.  ;)

Do dog feet smell like corn chips or do corn chips smell like dog feet?
