Title: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: TAftonomos on December 22, 2009, 02:06:31 PM Finally a solution for those stupid rubber snubbers and hose clamps. Why some other shop hasn't done this before, I have NO idea.... Couldn't stand hose clamps on my bike (and it's not a 100K build or a movie bike, etc).
Billet aluminum, stainless fasteners. Holds the reservoir securly to the frame while looking the part. Doesn't stick out any further than the rad on the s4r bikes, and will fit anywhere on a ducati frame. Matter o fact, I'll be using this on my SBK build as it's got the ohlins remote resi on it as well. Anyway, I've got 8 extra "sets", which I will be selling. Anodizing is available, black and Ti are the planned colors. I might make more depending on how these sell/market to shops. Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: Travman on December 22, 2009, 03:25:47 PM Just curious, why did you mount the reservoir so far up on the frame? Is it for aesthetic or functional reasons?
Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: Ducatl on December 22, 2009, 03:27:03 PM that looks great [thumbsup]
Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: TAftonomos on December 22, 2009, 03:48:02 PM Just one spot to put it. WHen I have it rebuilt later in the year I'll shorten the house and mount it towards the back somewhere. [thumbsup]
Ought to look really good with black ano.. (And even better with Ti/silver once I get the reservoir anodized black. Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: justinrhenry on December 26, 2009, 12:36:01 PM very cool

I'd love to...cept I know nothing about making a webpage....and don't have thousands (or even hundreds) of dollars to have one made! [bang] Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: NAKID on December 26, 2009, 02:31:30 PM I think there are enough people here with the know-how that might even trade work for parts...
Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: justinrhenry on December 26, 2009, 05:04:20 PM you can buy webpage templates and make one cheap.

Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: justinrhenry on December 27, 2009, 02:04:11 PM Cost? Do a google search for "website templates" and you'll get lots of hits. You can buy a template, download some free software to personalize it, pay for webspace and a url for well under $100. Of course it will take some time to personalize the template, especially if you've never done it before. Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: dbran1949 on December 28, 2009, 11:56:49 AM The bike is looking great, nice job on the clamps [bow_down]. I don't have remote a res but still want them ;D
What ever happened to your full bike Ti fastener kit idea? Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: TAftonomos on December 28, 2009, 02:35:01 PM Thanks for the compliments!
I've got 99% of the fasteners on the bike measured/listed and a few people here have bought kits from me. It's all available, just send me a PM [thumbsup] Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: orangelion03 on December 28, 2009, 04:03:59 PM Wow Theo! The finished product looks pretty good on the bike!!
And your bike looks great!!! [bang] Dude, nice work on the res. holder! Love it! [bacon] Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: junior varsity on January 02, 2010, 06:52:18 AM I want one. Let me measure the reservoir on my Penske and see if its the same, and the tubing on my pre-02 frame.
And me want it in black. Got price ideas? Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: TAftonomos on January 07, 2010, 05:41:41 PM Here is what I'm coming up with.
The anodizer I've been talking to says that if we do them in black, they will eventually turn brownish/purple. It's just the name of the game being in the sun. We could hard anodize them, but they would come out matte black, which probably isn't what you are looking for. So, here is what I've come up with. Powdercoat the colors (black, ti, red, whatever), and I can send half of the batch to the anodizers for a shot of clear. It would protect them from any corrosion, and it's not going to change color. You could of course, polish them.....but thats not something I'm interested in. $115 for a powdercoated or clear ano'd shipped $105 for a set as-is. Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: junior varsity on January 08, 2010, 05:00:53 AM black powder is great for me, that's what i did with my u-bracket and headlight and under-triple damper mount. and something else, but i've forgot already.
Gloss black, that is. Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: badgalbetty on January 08, 2010, 05:43:29 AM I think the reason that no other shop has come up with this or that the manufacturers have not is money. With the price of manufacturing, manufacturers would not want the extra cost of a part like this in their process. They could probably make this part for an additional 5-7 dollars because they would be making thousands of them.
Now this is a bike specific part only for your can and your frame. The kit that came with my Penske shock is the rubbber and hose clamp deal. This is a non bike specific kit and is most likely put in eery single shock that they sell and it will fit every single bike made. There is no bike specific mounting kit. They are probably in to these parts for less than $2.00 all in as they buy them by the shed load. Now as a manufacturer what would you do?Remember hat bottom line is a dollar(rouble, yen pound, dinero, shekkal whatever) but in business one is always controlling costs and making cuts to maximize profits. Its basic business common sense and if they can have a one size fits all mounting kit that fits all cannisters for all bikes then that friends is what they go with. I like your bits. Oh that sounded bad..... I like your parts, shoot, that sounds even worse. [laugh] I like the clamps you manufactured! [bow_down] BGB. Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: junior varsity on January 08, 2010, 06:17:14 AM While I might agree, that doesn't mean DP or Rizoma or Speedymoto wouldn't manufacture these. The Penske and Ohlins Reservoirs are the same size we've discovered (TAftonomos and I), as are the frame tube diameter on his bike and my M900. They sell single-bike 'bling' parts, such as Hypermotard specific parts, etc. And this must all be put into perspective - Monsters are the majority of sales!
Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: TAftonomos on January 08, 2010, 06:28:50 AM Thats one of the reasons why I don't bother on a lot of things/ideas I've got.....someone will just copy it, mfg. it overseas where you can do nothing to enforce any kind of patent (which you arn't going to get anyway....spend 5K on a patent to maybe make some money short term).
Keep in mind that the tube size on frames is the same or really close, but at the same time Ohlins or Penske probably sell 10 shocks for other mfg to every one for a duc... Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: badgalbetty on January 08, 2010, 06:54:32 AM Ducati had made about 150,000 monsters over the years. Frame sliders for these bikes are all the same ,so there is potentially 150,000 customers for a part like a frame slider. How many people are going to upgrade their shock? 1or 2 % that makes the potential market about 1500 units. Take three manufacturers, divide 1500 by 3 =500 units each. Cost of R&D,setting up machines, labor, advertising, packaging etc =not a viable business plan. Bottom line is there is not enough potential income compared with set up of a project like this.
Clutch covers and misc parts are a must have ,with a lot larger potential market for profit. It really is all about what a company decides to do , and how much carry over there is to other models. Thats why in a world where there is so many different frame size outside diameters the old bit of rubber and a hoseclamp works so well. Most people who do a rear shock upgrade are racers, aesethetics to them are so unimportant. Just get the shock on the bike set it up and go. They don't care about bracketry. I love your ideas, you are a talented person, keep them coming!! BGB. Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: TAftonomos on January 12, 2010, 11:23:14 AM For anyone still watching...
I dropped off the brackets today to be anodized. Black is the color. It is a newer anodizing process, that is guaranteed to be fade proof, but still shiney/glossy (unlike hard ano). I will have them back in my hands later this week/early next week. -Theo Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: Charlief on January 12, 2010, 04:24:34 PM Fade free black ano?? Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: BastrdHK on January 13, 2010, 07:35:33 PM Taft's Ebay store is the way to go. Very simple and cheap to setup and serves the purpose. You would have to pay a lot of $$ to get the same exposure to potential customers for your business website that Ebay already has in place.
Taft, any Titanium fastener kits for an '01 M900? Title: Re: Remote reservoir shock people....come on in :) Post by: 2001cromo on January 16, 2010, 05:34:13 PM Theo,
I'd like a pair in black please. 2001 M900 with Ohlins. PM me or send me an invoice or what ever I need to do.
