Title: 848/1098 front end on monster Post by: He Man on December 22, 2009, 05:25:31 PM theres a few combo 848/1098 fornt ends complete with forks, brakes, and masters with clip ons. Was wondering if it is a direct swap on as far as the rotor offset goes...aside from needing the get a new triple that is.

That shouldnt be too hard. theres a full front set for $800 bucks for 848 front, and $1500 for 1098 front end i think the 848 will be plenty good. Title: Re: 848/1098 front end on monster Post by: TAftonomos on December 28, 2009, 12:24:02 AM WAIT....for a deal. I paid $625 for my 1098 forks, and they already had ohlins 25mm cartridges in them [thumbsup] Calipers (1098 monoblocks) are worth around $4-500 used....

Was wondering if it is a direct swap on as far as the rotor offset goes...aside from needing the get a new triple that is. It depends on which Monster you're trying to install them on. The S*4 Monsters are not a direct fit but still not too difficult. The axles are both 25mm so no worries there. The Rotor offset on the Monsters are 10mm where as the 1098/848 is 15mm so a spacer is required. Hooligan Machinist just made a set for me and made a few extras as well so there not hard to source right now. The other issue is the hub on the wheels. It's wider on the 1098/848 so you'll need a spacer machined for the axle. Here's a pic so you can see: (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff176/MonstermashS2R/996/996-1098Forkconversion004.jpg) If the bike you're trying to do this to is a newer Monster without the speedo drive on the front axle then just use the stock spacer on that side. My 996 has the speedo drive so I used that but I had to source a different set of rotor bolts for clearance issues. Once the 5mm rotor spacer is installed the factory rotor bolts will make contact with the speedo drive. I special ordered a set of M8 1.25 x 25 stainless button head bolts that have a lower profile from a local hardware store which should do the trick. We're only talking about 1-2mm difference. Here is a few pics of that side of the bike: (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff176/MonstermashS2R/996/996-1098Forkconversion005.jpg) (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff176/MonstermashS2R/996/996-1098Forkconversion006.jpg) Other than that and the triples it's pretty stright forward. Just keep in mind that if you use the front end from a 1098 then you won't be using the spacers on the calipers. The 1098 uses 330mm rotors where as the 848/Monsters use a 320mm. I'm in the middle of doing a 1098 swap on my 996 so I'll post up the entire process with pics once it's complete. The rotors are the difference to my knowledge, you would need the corsa 6 bolt rotors which have 5mm less (or more) offset....or you can do the spacer thing.
Spacing radial calipers is easy, and the axle is the same as well. [thumbsup] My bike required no spacers anywhere, axle or otherwise. Any of the S2R or regular S4R bikes will need spacers for the rotors and axle. Which is why they S2R's will need 5mm spacers for the rotors. The 6 bolt rotors have a 10mm offset with the exception of the 748R/996R/998R bikes which have a 15mm offset. The 5 bolt rotors found on the S4Rs/Rt and the 999/1098/848 have the 15mm offset. I have been considering swapping out my wheels for a set from an 848 in the future as well to eliminate the need for all the spacers but I need to figure out how to keep my speedo drive with those wheels or chage out the gauges. |
