A buddy and I are looking to go on a 4 day road trip over new years. We would be starting in NYC and we are hoping to keep the driving to a 15hr radius of NY. We are thinking south just because of how cold it is... I also have some family in NC that I can stay with. We are also thinking near a city or a college because there will drunken people...
We are thinking of camping most of the time or maybe even going to couchsurfering.org to find a place to crash. The budget allows for food, gas and booze.
Any ideas of places to go and see, or interesting night life near a place to camp? Has anyone been to the Outer Banks, NC in the winter?
Any ideas welcome.
in 15 hrs of straight driving you can be near orlando
tampa is jsut on the other side of the state which is but a short drive away...just keep in mind that most college kids will be home for the holidays right now.

good point about people being home...
has anyone had experience with couchsurfing.org?
And with the mid-Atlantic still digging out, a lot of campgrounds that'd regularly be open might not be. I'd imagine that sticking close to the coast (as it sounds like you're planning) would improve your chances of finding places open.
I just got back from the outer banks area last week when I was on business and it was about 30 - 40s temperature wise. I was expecting warmer.

Is there anything to do down there?

Made the drive in from I95 south 2 hours toward the coast and it didn't seem like there was much to do. I spent most of my time around the Marine base and didn't see much else. Maybe there's more to do closer to the OBX but it was COLD.
you could go to assiteague or chinkoteagueand try to ride the horses. idk if tghe mosquitoes are out at this temp, but if they are then you can try to shoot them out of the air.
Savannah Ga has been the decided destination. Apparently there are fireworks in the historic area and no open container laws...
Does anyone have any specific restaurant recommendations or know any cool bars to go to ?
My brother moved down there this summer with his family; I'll see what he has to say....
My boss recommended this place (although he hasn't been there in a few) http://www.thepirateshouse.com/ (http://www.thepirateshouse.com/)
You can try this too:
http://savannahvisit.com/contact/chat (http://savannahvisit.com/contact/chat)
Some pubs to try: McDonoughs, Locos, The Distillery or Moon River Brewing
Jen's & Friends, Mrrphy's Law Public House, Savannah Smiles, and Wet Willies
I've been told to stay away from Paula Deen's restaurant as it is VERY overpriced.
From some of my friends:
The Olde Pink House is fabulous. http://www.10best.com/Savannah,GA/Voted_Best_of_the_City/Restaurants/807/Olde_Pink_House_Savannah_GA/ (http://www.10best.com/Savannah,GA/Voted_Best_of_the_City/Restaurants/807/Olde_Pink_House_Savannah_GA/)
Pink House Menu with prices.

Make a reservation for upstairs! The food, the wine, the service, even the decor all were topnotch when we were there in March.
For fun, go to the Crab Shack on Tybee. It is very good food at a reasonable price and there are even alligators to look at!
This link has a list of some suggestions - http://savannahga.net/ (http://savannahga.net/)
Also from some other people:
Churchills, or Kevin Barrys
We're at about your halfway point (Norfolk VA). If you need a place to crash, lemme know.
If you're looking to explore, and see some scenery on the way, take a left at Wilmington, and head down the eastern shore, and across the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel, and take the ferry system into NC, then down the OBX and catch the ferries over to the mainland just above Morehead City. It's a really scenic drive, and takes about 8 hours to go from Norfolk to Morehead city. Just make sure to check the ferry times to make sure you don't get stuck in Hatteras overnight.

it's pretty yes, but avoid 13 in DE like the plague.

it's pretty yes, but avoid 13 do the speed limit in DE. Cops are worse than like the plague.

It all depends on what your looking to do. Pour Larry's is one of my favorite places because they have beer pong. The fireworks for new years are never anything special but they do have a party in City market with a live band that tends to be ok.

it was stop light after stop light the entire way from wilmington on
and let's not talk about the traffic...
but yes, there are tons of cops in DE.
If you're looking for some breakfast: Express Cafe & Bakery (think bread pudding!)
just got in... 4am!
thanks for the offer Bun-bun.
this is a strange city...
Stange how? My brother (who lived in NYC since 1986 or so) just moved there. He's doing ok although he also remarked it takes some adjustment.

Having grown up in Philly and there still being things that make me say that, I completely understand.

Why is that strange?
I think it had to do with the time of day and weather of the city when I first drove in... it was really foggy the streets were wet, dead empty and the driving through the tunnels of live oaks at 3am was crazy. (https://farm5.static.flickr.com/4055/4239732360_ff0d2494aa_b.jpg)
I had no idea what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. BTW Strange ≠Bad
NYE was tons of fun, lots of young and old people out having a good time. Everyone was very nice and friendly and my buddy and I ate a bunch of great food. Lots of live music and no cover at almost every bar. and those southern Belles...
Savannah is a definitely a cool spot and would recommend it as a fun vacation get away.
