Didn't you just get rid of your last old diesel?

Actually, I've heard the opposite about that engine. I was going to buy one from a guy once, came with three motors and none of them ran right. That is a heavy vehicle for a motor that was designed for a compact car. If you want a diesel jeep, why not stick a bulletproof MB diesel in a Jeep with a blown motor?
That motor was use in panel trucks! And read the auction about how Winnebago used them in RVs.
I'm not surprised you saw bad stuff about this motor, very few people around to work on them but plenty to screw them up!
I drive a 1997 Dodge diesel 4x4 longbed on a regular basis. Great truck.
I remember the Winnebago LeSharo RV. They were touted as a fuel efficient RV, and they were. They were also slow as snails, and had reliability problems.
Speaking of reliability problems, Jeep isn't exactly known as a reliable vehicle in its own right.
Yes, the RV was considerably heavier than the Jeep, but face it, there's a reason they only made 50 of 'em.
If you end up as the owner of this contraption, and it develops problems, what do you do? ship it to Iowa for service?
Unfortunately, here in the U.S., if you want a reliable 4wd diesel, your options are a domestic truck or a MB car with AWD. Hopefully that will change in the near future.
If you're dead set on a diesel 4x4, I'd look at a short wheel base single cab Dodge or Ford truck. Even the 2wd versions have good traction, and can get you into into trouble.
I was in D.C. last weekend in my Dodge, and had no trouble getting around, except for having to pass all of those Hummers tiptoeing around at 20mph. I was in 2wd for 90% of the driving.

I've had plenty of grief with 2wd trucks and SUVs around me. They didn't plow my street for 3 days and only the 4wds were getting out. I don't want anything bigger than a small SUV (like a Cherokee) and I love a diesel! I have the diesel ranger but its 2wd.. Argh..
Older diesels are pretty simple to work on if you can get parts and the Renault engine has parts around.
IV yes we have a precious few diesels. Plenty of bigger trucks like F250 and Dodges but they are make the beast with two backsing huge and really too big for me. I drive a golf TDI and have an older ford ranger with a turbodiesel.
Ducatiz, are you still thinking about selling the Ranger?
Yes. I love it but I need a 4wd. I just out a new injector pump on it and new brakes coming.
Gets 25 mpg city easily.
This has you written all over it!

Why don't you turn your Ranger into a 4wd?
A transfer case, driveshaft, and front axle should be easy enough to come by, any scrapyard should be able to hook you up, and it's got to be cheaper than a new vehicle.
I would think you could get away for under $1k in parts.

make the beast with two backs that! 50 grand for an suv? no thanks.
plus i like small diesels, that V10 is too much, and I really want a truck, not an SUV.
the only reason I would sell my Ranger is its 2wd. I'm looking at JDM HiLux's.. there are not a few diesel hilux's around and they are well cared for, just have to pay for shipping..

I have a 2004 VW Jetta diesel.

The liberty's diesel is a VM which is the same make out in the euro version of diesel Jeeps in the 90s. VM used to own Ducati!

if only they sold those in the USA.. the car companies put crappy diesels on the road in the 80s and people quickly got sick of them -- imagine a tractor engine in your Cadillac.
Now, Americans are all but brainwashed against diesel cars. It's depressing, it's a much better ride in so many ways. Are the Subaru using H4 engines.
I used to have a 1972 Mercedes 220D with a 4-speed manual. I loved that car, it got 32mpg city. If I could find another mercedes with a stick and air, I'd get rid of my crown vic.
Diesel is getting a better rep here. The MB, VW and the new BMW diesels are really hot sellers right now with their new "Green Diesel" image. I would love the BMW X5 diesel(much better than the used Tuareg and at the same price). Great vehicle, and gets 28mpg.

OK, here's the new V6 TDI Touareg, 225hp 406 lb-ft of torque! It's AT LEAST on par with the X5 as far as quality goes. Also all the 2009 and up VWs include maintenance for the first 3 years like BMW...

18/25 MPG, not bad. Bimer is still better. As far as quality, I don't see how you can compare a Veedub to a BMW. Whole different ballpark. And the X5 is 265hp/425ft and still gets a mile or two more per gallon. Plus the ergonomics are much better.
Also, the X5 does 0-60 about 2sec quicker!! ;)
Have you been in a VW lately? Not trying to threadjack, but my brother in law has a BMW 550 and the interior is really no nicer than the one in the wife's Touareg, even he says so...

That came in the Montero. It shouldn't be hard to find used. If you insist upon new, try www.globalmitsubishiparts.com (//http://). They carry older parts thru 1984, and they have the transfer cases for both manual and automatic. Just be prepared for some sticker shock.
Also the 4D56 is the engine designation, not the trans/transfer case designation. If you know the ratios in your current trans, you can have a transfer case built for your application using the correct gears to give you whatever final drive ratio you might want for rock crawling, mudbogging, pulling a sled, etc.. Manufacturers can be found in almost any 4x4 or 4wd magazine. Also check www.4wheelparts.com (//http://), and sign up for their free magazine while you're there, it's worth reading.
Next summers vaction is Germany, Austria, and Italy. Airline tickets are brought. Got a BMW 118d reserved.
I let you know what I think of BMW's baby oil burner. It's supposed to get around 5O mpg hiway.
Now if BMW would only bring the 1er hatchbacks to USA with the 4 cylinder diesel and a 6 spd MT. That would be my DD.

They are still using the 4D56 in the Pajero in Australia, I guess i could just order one. I'd love to get a whole new engine with the intercooler and CRD, it puts out >140 hp compared to my little truck's 85. Mounts are in the same place too... >sigh<

sno_duc don't get carried away with the bmw 118d economy stats as my wife had one for 31months and before that had a 320d for a similar time. The 320d would average 60+mpg but the 118d would only return 45-49mpg and the build quality of my wifes car wasn't a patch on the 320d which it replaced. In april of this year she exchanged the bm for a 2.0tdi golf which she regularly gets 70+ mpg and the build quality is far superior to my mind than the bm, the car is used around town plus occasionally 300mile trips and she has quite a heavy right foot.

the best upgrade i think would be the later model engine... it's a drop-in, i tell you! drop in!
but i have to get it shipped from fricking australia. i found one on ebay with a 4wd transfer case & tranny. $2000
That's not a bad price at all, especially for motor/trans/transfer case. Then all you'ld need is the front axle off a 4x4 Ranger, and a driveshaft, and you're in high cotton.
Trouble is, the shipping's gonna be what, $5-600?
Still, you'ld get basically a new 4wd vehicle that gets 35-40mpg for $3k. That ain't bad atall.
