Can I use a stock steering damper from a 748 916 996, on my Ohlins front ended, 2007 S4RS?
I doubt it. The damper attatches to the top triple on the SBK.
Yes you can....
I think you are going to need to get/fab new brackets to hold the damper unit.

You'd need the SBK top tripple if it fits, and a fabbed bracket for the frame. I'm not sure if the top tripple will fit.
OK, here's the deal.
SBK damper attaches to the upper triple and a bracket that's welded onto the frame.
S4Rs doesn't have a bracket on the frame.
SBK triple will *not* fit, as the part of the triple that the damper attaches to will conflict with the keyswitch bracket on the S4Rs.
Besides that, the SBK triple has no provision for attaching the handlebar, as SBKs have clip-ons.
look in the parts for sale section someone has a damper that will work on your bike.
I'm STILL confused?
I already bought a stock damper & hardware from a 996, but only paid $30 bucks for it, so I guess I'll try & fab something?
Maybe the damper itself is generic - if so, you'll need only the top mount brackets to fit it?

I couldn't find a 996 pic, but this is similar. The damper will not fit on a monster because of the key location.

You may be able to fab something, but the 'stroke' of a 996 damper is pretty short, so it'll be a bit of a challenge.
'fabbed' SBK damper mount. Speeddog is right that the stroke is pretty short.

What im trying to say is, you CAN install it. Its not an issue. HOW you are going to do it, is a different story. Theres more than 1 way to skin a cat and Spidey just showed you one way.
not sure why you bought a damper and expect it to just bolt on...
All sbk dampers top mount have a 68mm stroke, like the spidey machine ,engineered by Stuart Baker, the side mount damper for monsters have 140mm stroke as bolt either to the lower oart of the triple or the fork stanchion.Arrow special parts at one time had a top mount bracket for the monster to suit the ohlins damper, with 68mm stroke ,I would imagine it would suit the stock unit as well ,providing the barrel is the same OD. Contack arrow for info.
later...RS
Never expected it to "just bolt on", but I've had a fair amount of success at Fabing and modifying parts to work on different bikes.
And, I'm not even a Kiwi!
I can see that the extremely short stroke on the stock unit presents the greatest problem, as far as restrictions in mounting positions.
The mounting method Spidey showed in his pics works great on air-cooled Monsters, but you have to weld the boss onto the frame.
Won't work on water-coolers, as the radiator's in the way.
