Bought a PS3 just after T day for my Xmas gift to myself...I've watched one bluray movie, and played about 10 hours worth of games since then. I went to play it last night, and it just had to download yet another update for something....every damn time I want to play it's got to update.
Anyway, I leave it to update and go to bed. Came home today, went to play CODmw2...doesn't read the disc. WOn't read a Bluray either, or a regular dvd and the drive is making a clunking noise after about 15 seconds of "spinning" noises.
3 weeks, 12 hours total and it's broken. I'd gone through the same FN thing with a 360, and it's been off to microsoft 3 times already in the 3 years I've had it. Of course, that was back when the xbox was pretty new...the PS3 has been out for 3 years.
What I'm getting at is I don't think it's right for me, not super impressed, can't get it to stream from my computer (says all of my Mpeg4 files are "corrupted"...yet the 360 reads them fine.
Are there any other media servers out there for around $300 that will stream movies from my compter? Might I be better off just building a cheapy PC from spare parts and parking that next to the TV ?
Should I return/exchange the PS3 and give it another try?
Xbox 360s are really werid. some of them suck some of them dont. Im on my 2nd one (via warranty) it runs great and it streams from my computer just fine. If you have an xbox 360, you should try setting it up, however its much more senesitive to file types than ps3 is.
*Thread jack alert*
Just got the wireless network adopter for XBOX 360 but it doesn't seem to be able to pick up wireless signal... Any idea?

That's strange cause it's actually your computer that's reading the file and decoding the format. Sounds like you're not streaming but reading the file directly (like SMB)

Have you tired this? It works for me (on Mac).

A lot of people seem to recommend ps3mediaserver but I actually find WMP12 on windows 7 better. The only downside I don't have a solution for yet is subtitles.
Just curious about this, I am not sure how relevant it is to your situation, but do you have the slim or the older PS3? Is it sitting horizontally or vertically? Re: updates, were these PS3 or game updates?
If you decide to get the PS3 fixed, you may try Tversity - it will transcode and stream just about everything except mkv (this is a limitation of the PS3, not the media server), and there are utilities that will convert mkv to vob that work well (I'm using mkv2vob).

I don't know what has come out in the last six months or so, but the WD media players are pretty neato. The folks at the AVS forum seem to think highly of them

PS3 slim, about 3 weeks old.
Exchange it and give it another shot.
if you decide to bail on the PS3
check out the Dell Zino HD with Bluray (when that option is back in stock)
I`ve had mine for well over a year and had no problems. I can stream Mp4s and movies downloaded from some certain websites [evil]. You have to set up your windows media player to stream it then just put the movies in a shared folder.
I also have an Apple TV with Boxee (http://www.boxee.tv) hacked onto it. This streams movies well for $200 and also get you Pandora, Hulu, etc. Boxee has a box coming out soon and it should be able to do Netflix as well.
As far as the updates go....that's actually a huge plus for the PS3.
Most of the updates are game related (fixing glitches, patches etc). For whatever reason the publishers seem to be more proactive on the PS3 than XB which is surprising considering PSN is free v. XBLive annual subscription.
The system updates for the most part have been Blu-Ray related and that is also a huge plus. The PS3 is the most future proof Blu-Ray player you'll find. As long as the HW spec doesn't change most of the feature upgrades are software/firmware related and as such are easily updateable.
From a gaming standpoint if you don't game online the PS3 is hands down a better system (faster cpu, better memory and graphics, shorter load times in game on whole). If you game online I still give XBLive an edge even though I game more on PSN than XB.
I'd exchange it and try again. I'm on XB360 number 5 but still on my original PS3 (bought at launch).
I tried taking it back to W-mart where I bought it. They were willing to exchange it....cept they didn't have any in stock?!? I'll try again this coming week. In the mean time I filled out the online form/service request from Sony. The 2 emails I got describe how to pack it up, label it with the provided label.....yet nowhere mention if they are sending me a box of not [laugh]
I'm assuming the box is on the way, but if wally world will swap it out with a new console I'll try that route. Returning/buying another was out of the question, as I bought a special holiday bundle with a blue disc and 2 games for $299...and they don't have any of those again.
In ironic related news....I recieved 4 new movies from a deal I found online a week ago (20$ off using google checkout....no limit on cost or amount. They shut it down about 20 mins after it went active, I got in 4 orders :D).
The movies that arrived are all blue ray [bang] [laugh] [bang] [laugh]
