So glad you are OK. Sure bikes get wrecked... who cares. People are what counts. Bikes come and go. Again, really glad you aren't hurt too bad. At least you got that bad sh#t out of the way on the first day of the year! You are here by pre-disastered. No more bad joo-joo for the rest of 2010. The prophets have spoken! [thumbsup] [bow_down] Title: Re: T went down Post by: Cher on January 02, 2010, 07:40:10 AM Crap! That totally sucks. >:( I think at the last trackday we were both at, I noticed you had a back protector. Were you wearing one when you crashed? And if so, do you think it helped prevent further injury? Title: Re: T went down Post by: Samsonite on January 02, 2010, 08:07:59 AM Thanks everyone! Just sore today...
Lisa, I 100% believe the back protector helped. My suit also has more padding than most suits. It has large hip pads and extra padding in multiple areas. I've often thought to myself I need a better "race" suit, but I'm glad glad I was wearing this one. It has a padded speed hump and built in back protector, but I was also wearing my back protector too. No doubt the wreck could have been much worse. I'm actually pretty lucky. I'm 265 pounds and that's a lot of weight to be tumbling uncontrollably down the pavement..... Title: Re: T went down Post by: Samsonite on January 02, 2010, 08:15:39 AM (http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL363/7371556/22851213/380495963.jpg)
I think it was Boot Hill, but might have been Tombstone. I remember when I was standing by my bike and was looking toward pit Road, there was a flagger stand just across from me. I think I was below the flag stand a lil bit, but it was on the inside of the track and I was on the outside. All I know was I had got passed going into Horseshoe by a guy working with Ty. He and Jim (Motopia member) were running the same pace. I could hear Jim right behind me. He was on his Buell 1125 and and just had a new exhaust on it, so I knew it was him. They average about 7-8 seconds per lap faster than me. I think when the 1st guy passed and I was between him and Jim, I tried to go faster than my pace. Jim was right on my tail setting up to pass me on the inside. I remember coming out of horseshoe and going for an up shift to 3rd (I still don't use GP shift, which makes it harder for me to shift while leaning). I think I was off line which was pointing toward the apex (off track) I'm assuming I tried to over compensate and I tucked the front. The front tire slid out briefly, and when it caught, it twisted the bike, which sent me into a nasty high side. I went up and over the bike flipping over and came down on my ass onto the pavement. From there, I just somersaulted off the track and stopped about 25' into the grass. I remember rolling and seeing my bike WAY up in the air. I laid in the grass waiting for the stars to go away and kinda just trying to collect myself. I remember thinking my ass felt like Muskrat's probably does on a Sunday morning... It also felt like one of my nipple rings was ripped out. After about a minute I pulled off my gloves and pulled off my helmet. I stood up and was kinda just looking around at all the wreckage. There were parts of my bike scattered pretty far apart. Ty came over and helped. He thought it was pretty wild that my rear tire busted its bead. Then we saw the divot that the rear tire made, and it was over a foot deep. That was a good 25' off track and the bike was further than that. It pretty much caught somewhere and took flight. (http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL363/7371556/22851213/380490690.jpg) moral of the story is to roll on the gas and take pressure off the front tire and not roll off like I did while trying to correct a bad line in an apex. By rolling off the gas it loaded the front tire in the apex of the turn and caused me to slip the front. Tire warmers, fresh rubber, and GP shift would have also helped the situation. Title: Re: T went down Post by: Cher on January 02, 2010, 11:44:33 AM Damn-damn-damn - what a ride :o Thanks for sharing your story T. I've now got my back protector right beside my helmet and gloves... If it works that well at the track, it'll be part of my "normal" riding gear every time I'm on the bike. I hope you're feeling better and back out there soon! Title: Re: T went down Post by: svoloch on January 02, 2010, 01:23:04 PM On the upside, your hair looks terrific. where do you get it cut?
Title: Re: T went down Post by: Jester on January 02, 2010, 04:14:18 PM Glad you're ok man.
Wait until it warms up before you hit the track again! Title: Re: T went down Post by: rickmillertx on January 02, 2010, 05:13:43 PM On the upside, your hair looks terrific. where do you get it cut? Title: Re: T went down Post by: RED on January 03, 2010, 10:15:18 AM Well, as one who has been down this road before (literally) the back protector SHOULD be a part of your riding gear. It was one huge factor in my off-track experience recently that I thank God for. I hit on my back and felt the protector doing it's job. One accident with an injury to your spine and you're pretty much out of commision if not forever for a long rehab time.
I am so glad to hear that you're just sore and not injured moreso. My chest and ribs were the most serious injuries in my crash. It takes so long to be able to breathe normally or to reach for anything. So take it easy T and take your time. If you need anything man let me know. Since you are there for people on this board we'll be here for you. You can probably cash in on selling the parts off the bike and make more money rather than selling the whole bike. Of course it could be a real bad-assed naked now. Title: Re: T went down Post by: Samsonite on January 03, 2010, 10:18:13 AM I'm torn between parting it out, or just fixing it.
Title: Re: T went down Post by: RED on January 03, 2010, 10:26:33 AM I'm torn between parting it out, or just fixing it. The frame will give you that answer. Although, from now on you won't be so worried about it going down on the track. Title: Re: T went down Post by: Samsonite on January 03, 2010, 10:27:39 AM Just pulled the trigger on an Arai Corsair V. Hope they fit true to size. The AGV didn't.... I loved my Suomy :-\

-I still have to read the whole thread. HOPE T's OK!!!! Title: Re: T went down Post by: jdugger on January 06, 2010, 03:36:51 AM So, I'm Tommy's buddy Jim that is developing a bit of a reputation for crashing out Motopia members right in front of him. In particular on Gixxers. Another member last year wadded his 750 in a throttle induced high-side coming out of rattlesnake clockwise right in front of me. I know if I were a Gixxer, I'd be scared of the Buell, too... :) T is fine... like a good man he went to the hospital and got checked out. Lord knows I wish all the people I have known to crash were smart like T and not the belligerent "I'm a man" they usually are... Anytime the helmet touches and there's a knot on your grape, go get scanned... So good on you Tommy, and I know everyone is glad to know you are OK. The crash was more or less as described. I was coming up on the inside of T going into Tombstone setting up for a pass. Running CCW, that's a great place to pass because the pass-e will be setting up to use all the track wide and it gives the passer a clean line on the inside that won't disrupt the other rider. From my perspective, I saw Tommy's front tuck, slide, grab, twist and then toss. It happened really fast. He was a bit off line, but there aren't a lot of marbles and unexpected elements on the track there since the cars do a good job of clearing it... There's no question something loaded the front tire -- possibly that shift -- but I also think there's a chance he simply bottomed his suspension. We had been working on it in the paddock, and I had gotten to the point where damping, compression and rebound were all at the max, and T was still using up almost 80% of the fork travel even at low speeds. So, it's always worth getting a bike sprung and valved for your weight and skill level... Now it's so cold we can only talk about riding... :( Title: Re: T went down Post by: RED on January 06, 2010, 08:22:16 AM Hey Jim, Charlie here, we met a few times at Motopia. Good stuff and +1 on the hospital trip. Bikes repair much faster than does the human element. [thumbsup]
Title: Re: T went down Post by: Cher on January 06, 2010, 06:55:22 PM Well Jim Dugger! Glad to see you find our lil' corner of the web universe. And BTW, these folks have been known to do an Arkansas trip or two ;D Title: Re: T went down Post by: Samsonite on January 06, 2010, 08:42:32 PM Arkansas.... that was an awesome trip [thumbsup]
Title: Re: T went down Post by: petros2r on January 06, 2010, 09:54:16 PM Do you think that tire defect caused the crash?
Title: Re: T went down Post by: jdugger on January 07, 2010, 03:51:42 AM And BTW, these folks have been known to do an Arkansas trip or two ;D Sweet... I do Arkansas at least 10 times a year. Around here, there's really nothing else like it. If y'all will have a Buell with you, I know my way around up there pretty well. Title: Re: T went down Post by: jdugger on January 07, 2010, 03:57:08 AM Do you think that tire defect caused the crash? Old rubber is never good on the track, but in my worthless opinion, in this instance, no. I distinctly remember watching the front end push. I could have almost reached out at touched Tommy in that corner -- all three of us were riding wheel-to-wheel -- so I had a good perspective of the crash. I suspect the rear tire was reasonable, and was split in the rear wheel impact. The front was holding air and looked OK as we trailered the bike. Title: Re: T went down Post by: Samsonite on January 07, 2010, 05:02:05 AM Yeah, I'm not sure it was a defect. The bike flipped and landed on the rear tire.

I'm in the market for a "street"bike, will be ready for a spring trip. Title: Re: T went down Post by: Cyclone on January 07, 2010, 06:49:02 PM [evil] Yeah T, get one of those new Multistrada 1200S with the Black/Grey/Black color schemes so that I can buy it from you at the absurdly low price you always sell your bikes for after owning them for about six weeks after you get the title - maybe after an easy trip to say... Arkansas! ;)
Oh yeah & I'm glad you are ok after your track incident ! [moto] Title: Re: T went down Post by: Samsonite on January 07, 2010, 06:56:49 PM That was pretty funny....

All because I wanted a 1098s. If I were to quit riding (multiple) bikes, I'd probably have something to show for my income... [bang]Now I'm in negotiations on Duc #7....
