I've had my Monster for about three months now, and I still haven't gotten used to the angled bars.  There's too much 'pull back', and it's killing my hands.  I'm too used to riding my bike (this is it (http://nfggames.com/cam/bike.jpg)) and as you can see there's very little bend to the bars (another view here (http://www.bikerbahn.de/resources/_wsb_468x382_bb+039.JPG)).

The rise is fine, I'm happy with the the height, but I put my entire weight on the outside of my palms when I ride.  I don't know if it's my size (tall, broad shoulders) or what, but it seems the only way to get my hands to grab the bars with even pressure is to stick my elbows into my stomach, and that doesn't work so well.

Scouring the board seems to indicate it's not completely unheard of, but it seems the majority opinion is that stock is better.  Seems to me though that if I've spent 20 years riding more or less straight bars, there's a good chance I've adapted to it?

The question is: can I even get bars like I'm after?  And from where?

First time I've ever heard a rider needing less sweep. Most often it's the other way round, people riding with their elbows sticking out to have straight wrists - needing more sweep.

From your explanation it actually sounds that you need zero sweep (or very wide bars). Cduarte's links are probably perfect. The Rizoma clip ons can be adjusted to (almost?) zero sweep.

Another idea - have you played around with angles - maybe what you need is a down angle, like ordinary clip ons. Just sit anywhere and stick your arms out with loose elbows, hold a bar-size stick in each hand and observe the angle.

I put on Protaper "carmichael " low rise 800mm wide 92mm high 55mm sweep
Had to change the clamp to fit the thicker centre .
They feel like a dirt bike bar which they are so with them rolled back there is virtually no wrist angle, good for broad shoulders and a taller rider, added bonus with the alloy is zero vibration.
Took a day or two to get use to them now I really enjoy them.

Sadly the Rizoma bars (which look like pure sex, really) don't appear to fit my 1993 M900.  The other ones certainly seem appropriate, and I'll be looking into them.

ok, you have a '93 with the std chrome bars?
i'd look at the alloy magura's fitted to the S2R and S4R etc. they give you the height you like as opposed to clip ons which will have you leaning forward a lot more but they're wide and have virtually no sweep. they're a "fat" bar so you will need to figure the top triple mounting set up but the std top triple from a S*R should fit your forks (i think???) otherwise there's speedymoto, franks, cycle cat etc.
as dezmonster has said, you could fit MX bars, there's a huge range to choose from just check the width.

Also, Suburban Machinery bars have more sweep than stock bars (24 degrees vs 18) The OP needs less.

the top triple doesn't fit on the older carbed styles, different distances to the stantions. it was a change that happened with the new frame I suspect (01 s4 02 everything else?).

yeah of course! DOH!!! as well as that the steering stem nut is different. should still be able to get the risers for the fat bar to fit the old triple though.

p.s, i have a side on shot of my old '93 and the bars are a LOT more angled back than the maguras, never even looked at it before.

actually paul....i think it was YOU who steered me in the rigt direction...the nut on the steering column is an indicator as to what generation top triple you have!  [thumbsup]
