Title: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: eltristo on January 03, 2010, 05:53:14 PM So here's the deal. There is a (supposedly) really well built and designed S/C kit for my painfully underpowered car. It brings HP from 138 to over 200 and torque from 129 to 190 (at the crank, of course). Everything I've read on it is fantastic; super reliable, long life, made brilliantly and meshes with my m44 engine like a dream. The problem is that it's pricey, even used, and I still have that silly power-robbing slushbox hanging around.
Thoughts? Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: MadDuck on January 04, 2010, 06:20:30 AM Come down to the shop and check out this 540 that we have where the car owner installed a supercharger. See what problems he's having with a supposedly seamless "upgrade". Just sayin'.

[evil] supercharged hatchbacks are fun, too. ;) Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: DRKWNG on January 04, 2010, 01:16:03 PM M3 motor swap FTW! And we have a winner!! Post by: Speed 3 Pilot on January 04, 2010, 05:20:09 PM You could always get yourself an E36 M3, that way you get decent handling along with the power increase... ;D
Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: Brutale on January 04, 2010, 09:25:31 PM If you want the ultimate in handling and acceleration, get one of these bad boys!(http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/390750Atom_3_4_front.jpg)

That car is running around over here someplace. Of course I think the guy said it took him something like 3 years to do and he was still working some small bugs out. Of course I think the guy said it took him something like 3 years to do and he was still working some small bugs out. That would be the ultimate sleeper, especially with the S52 in it. Cool as hell, but not quite as cool as (http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/390750Atom_3_4_front.jpg) Best thing about the Ariel is that you can get them with the VW/Audi 1.8T motor, maybe even the 2.0T now. A simple chip and turbo back exhaust would have you pushing something like 300 whp. In a car that weighs the same as a slightly pudgy hamster! :o Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: MadDuck on January 05, 2010, 07:31:38 PM Do you know whose SC it was? Just curious... Supercharger made by Vortech. I don't know if it's their kit. Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: eltristo on January 06, 2010, 08:01:47 AM Supercharger made by Vortech. I don't know if it's their kit. Maybe it matters, maybe it doesn't, but this is an Eaton SC with the Downing Atlanta bits. Everything I have read about it is positive. Like, everything, which is weird. Their spiel: http://downingatlanta.com/downingatlanta/da_superchargers_info_new.htm (http://downingatlanta.com/downingatlanta/da_superchargers_info_new.htm) Knowing me I won't do anything anyway, but it doesn't keep me from wondering..... Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: teddy037.2 on January 07, 2010, 12:08:19 AM forget it.
sell bimmer, buy busa and rain suit. Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: hypurone on January 07, 2010, 04:38:23 AM The trick in supercharging is screw speed at max boost. You wanna keep the IAT as low as possible. Ideal would be an intercooler for the unit that is external from it.
I say go for it if the kit is well planned out for your application. One thing to check is if the kit has the provisions to reprogram the ECU or do you have to send it out etc etc. As for the slushbox, just have it rebuilt with a performance build and valve body kit. If I didn't want to retain my 5/100 warranty on my new Camaro I would have a Maggie 2300 on mine already! [thumbsup] [thumbsup] Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: MadDuck on January 07, 2010, 06:38:18 AM forget it. sell bimmer, buy busa and rain suit. If you want max squirt that's what I vote for. Having a wiper for the visor helps too. [laugh] If you supercharge the "ti" you will go down a long and winding road and will always, always have to deal with it one way or the other. Depends on your love of the car, your love of speed and your love of tinkering (or spending money on someone else to do the work for you.) --- Remember, no modification goes unpunished, ever. Our guy with the 540i has over $28,000 in the car including mods and that was a used car. For that dough he could have had a used M5 and it would outperform the car he has now. Choose your battles carefully. Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: eltristo on January 07, 2010, 05:04:18 PM Oh, fear not, my battle is chosen. My need for at least one reliable vehicle outweighs the TI's abhorrent performance. If only my transmission would suddenly die and have to be replaced with a manual.
Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: MadDuck on January 07, 2010, 09:28:15 PM I hate to tell you but you don't want to do that either for many of the same reasons as above. [bang]
Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: eltristo on January 08, 2010, 10:18:22 AM So what you're saying is enjoy my little automatic while I have to deal with crappy traffic then sell it to a nice old lady.
Title: Re: To supercharge the car or not... Post by: MadDuck on January 08, 2010, 07:30:51 PM Something like that.
