Title: Land of the Rising Sun, Here I Come
Post by: NAKID on January 04, 2010, 12:15:07 PM
So, Guam is out, USS George Washington is in. I will leave sometime early Feb, check into the ship sometime early Mar. I know we have a local board for Japan, but do any regular NMC posters live near Yokosuka?

Well if CVN 73 needs its cats recertified or has a major problem with its arresting gear then I'll be paying you a visit. In the meantime I'll be hanging out at NAES Lakehurst.

They'd fly you out to Japan for that? Wouldn't they have a support structure in place in Yokosuka?

Yeh, they will fly us to meet the boat anywhere. We are the only ALRE support structure I know of, they will COD us on and off if necessary. I think the last time there was a yokosuka trip was three years ago (before I worked here). Who knows, maybe another one soon.

So, in preparation for the upcoming move, I was looking at rates for an auto transporter. I want to tow the VW to Cali with my truck to store at my sister in law's house. The Touareg is too heavy for the UHaul trailer, Penske and Budget don't rent trailers without a truck rental. WTF??

good luck.
i tried to haul an 02 4runner with my F250......no one would rent me a trailer.

The Touareg is listed as 5300lbs. The maximum weight on the trailer is 5290lbs. 10 freaking pounds! Even so, they say that the vehicle towing the trailer must weight at least 80% of the combined trailer and towed vehicle weight. Trailer is 2210, max vehicle 5290 = 7500lbs. So, even though the truck is rated to tow over 11,000lbs, it would have to weigh 6000lbs in order for them to rent me the trailer.
Freaking UHaul and their damn rules. The Truck is more than capable for the job and the VW is a measly 10lbs over their max...

Agggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Umm... The GW? Well shit. I got lots of info for you. What do you want to know? Riding conditions? Living conditions? On or Off Base? Weather? Routine? Schedule?

What happened to being a bubblehead?

There's also a huge gear/parts shop about 20 minutes (by bike) from the base. Place is called NAPS. Around Yoko, it'll be the best place to pick up bits and pieces to keep the bike running, fix flats, buy accessories (for you and the bike).

I'm up Yokota way (2 hours north).  Couple guys down towards Yokosuka.  We're all on the www.gaijinriders.com (//http://) forum as the local forum here was too slow.

How long will you be here?

Dana

I just got back from Japan a few weeks ago.

I was surprised of the lack of motorcycles I saw there. A ton of Scooters but an actual motorcycle were few and far between. I visited many cities all over Tokyo and even went as far as Osaka and Kyoto and it was the same story all over the place.

I saw one Ducati the entire time I was there. It was a Hypermotard in an expensive fashion district.

It seem like in this order I saw the most vehicles

Bicycles
Scooters
Cars
Motorcycles

That's pretty typical of many Asian countries.

It's Official Official now. I just got back from a 10 day Disney vacation including 4 days at DisneyWorld and a 4 day Disney Cruise to the Bahamas.

During my trip, I got hard copy (read: not just verbal confirmation) orders to the USS George Washington (CVN 73), home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. I must report no later than 19 Mar 10. That means I have roughly one month to tie up any loose ends, sell a bunch of stuff, schedule movers and packers for long-term storage, and prepare to drive cross country.

The adventure begins....

enjoy the trip. It'll be an interesting tour. It's only 2 years if you go unaccompanied. But, I wouldn't recommend that.

Yeah, it was never really a consideration, but it was discussed. No reason not to bring the family, just to cut one year off the tour...

no, and not really worth it. Not unless the family had serious roots and the wife had a career that req'd her to stay.

You'll have fun though. Even after reporting though, it'll be a month or so before you even see the ship. They do their indoc and base/area orientation out of a bldg on base.
