Post by: grandpa nate on January 04, 2010, 01:30:42 PM
hope this is the right area....

i have this odd discoloration on the r/s of my engine.  tried to clean it off with no success.  it won't even mark with a finger nail (i don't want to go any harder for fear of marring the case).

anyone else get this?  any ideas on how to get rid of it?

that is all
nothing follows

It means your riding the piss out of the bike, like all real Ducati owners do [beer]
Honestly, its just the paint.. are you running lean? What is the engine temp? If its a normal reading, I wouldnt worry about it

Nate - Didn't I show you how clean I got the horizontal head of my bike?  Cleaned all the paint off with brake cleaner and wire brushes.  [thumbsup]  Looks so much better, and easier to keep clean.  My paint was totally baked, like they all do, cracked, yellow, stained.  I have stains on my side covers also that are baked on insects, grime, etc. It's baked into the paint.  Nothing shy of stripping the paint or painting over it is going to change this.  I plan on ploishing the cases if I ever pull the motor (someday for sure).

Ducati should really look into some more robust paint that doesn't have "for showroom use only" on the label.

I have the same issue, both sides.
Tried "everything" - it's probably the combination of soft (when hot) paint and dirt - add some wet riding and it's beyond fixing. My cases look brand new though, so it must be a different paint on the side covers.
When it becomes bad enough it'll be time for a black paint job....

I have that. i think anyone who actually puts miles on their bikes will have that. Which is why i am going to strip and repaint it with something that is more resistant to the elements.

Dont worry about marring it, paint is pretty thick.

I wonder if wet sandin with 600 grit would help.

it's just crappy paint.

take the covers off, strip 'em and have them re-powdered with a satin finish.  it looks better and will last longer.

Or do what I do, convince yourself it adds character [thumbsup]
