Odd topic, maybe it is the percocet's or I finally felt like posting it.
Does anyone else have an extensive coffee mug collection?
I guess this habit started from when I was a kid. My parents would always buy a coffee mug on every trip or new location they visited. Therefore, when they would have coffee, we would get to "pick" where they were having coffee that morning.
I carried this habit into my adult life with my wife and at first, she was hesitant, but now she is fully into it. So every morning, mostly weekends, we choose where we are having coffee.
I am having coffee in South Beach today. For some reason, she chose Baltimore (maybe she is having an affair with Statler? LOL).
The rules are you can't just be in an airport, you have to physically be in the city or outside the airport, but purchasing a coffee mug in the airport is acceptable, as that is where the best are. the cheesier the better.
Anyone else have a tradition like this? or just an odd collecting habit?
Just sort of a fun game we play in the morning on where you want to have coffee. Maybe I'll post a pic later of our growing collection. Duplicates are not acceptable unless you get rid of the previous for a newer one.
We do have a collection of coffee cups, but it wasn't intentional, it just sort of happened. My favorites are the UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County) mug, and one I got from a trade show that reads Journal of Pediatric Psychology.
I also have a collection of ball caps, which is even odder, since I almost never wear a ball cap.
not a collection, but I do have a pretty flowery mug from the Hilo Hattie store in HI that I'm using today.
Where is LMT's contribution to this post? After her comment in TOSAT yesterday, I expected this to be been a thread that she started.
My coffee cup collection constists of 6 blue cups from a title company from when I had the Real Estate business, their logo long since washed off, and a couple mugs from various banks.
Interesting concept. Good way to revisit fun memories.
Our oddball grouping of mugs grew over time, but it's nice to sit down with a cup of coffee 'with mom' or 'cousin Cheryl' or whomever gave me the mug.

That's kind of the way it started at home growing up.
And now with my wife, it is the same thing.
Whenever a certain mug is brought out, a funny memory of that vacation or location comes up and is always different.
Tiff went to Baltimore this morning. This is the only violation of the rule (she was only in the airport) but was delayed like 5 hours, so we figured that was long enough to warrant the purchase of a mug. And, it was one of the first mugs we had together, so added to the story.
I started buying my father beer steins for christmas, b-days, fathers day, way back in my teens.
Over the years, it turned into a pretty impressive collection.
When my parents split up 20 years ago, he gave them to me. I try to add to it every time i travel.
I collect rusty spoons.
everybody please send me one from your home town
[evil]

You need a spoon alright. [evil]
;D
i have a good 'mustache' coffee mug. just lots of mustaches drawn all over it and numbered. On the bottom of the mug is a key to see if you guessed correctly. One always gets people when they are guessing though, and it turns out to be Frida Kahlo's eyebrows. [laugh]

I have one mug that I use every morning at home for my coffee. No one else is allowed to touch it.
I take a small thermos to work each day. I pick a mug to take with and my choice sometimes is based on where I am teaching.
I also buy mugs as a vacation gift for myself. Most of my friends get me mugs from their travels also. I have a growing collection of Starbucks mugs. Country mugs include Jordan, Egypt, Germany, Britian, and Brazil. Bucks US mugs are Kona, New Mexico, DC, Seattle, and CA. I have a cool Tim Horton's mug, 2 Ducati mugs, and a dozen or so mugs from business I go teach at. I tell them I collect mugs and they give me one!
I also have about 15 Christmas mugs and I use them from about 15 Dec to the first week on Jan.
I have 3.
1 from the vendor that I get my coffee from www.8thsincoffee.com (//http://)
1 from a local gentleman's establishment where a bachelor party was had
1 from Warwick Castle depicting various torture implements used in the dungeon.
I use them as an indication of my mood for the day, ambivalent, optimistic, or dreading the first human interaction.
got a nice pantone mug (it's a designer thing...)

and a sweet pittsburgh mug, unfortunately from *bucks.
My wife used to travel a LOT for work. She collected refrigerator magnets. Same general rules as yours...but she also bought almost all of them at the airport as they have the best ones. The cheesier the better as well. [thumbsup]
Amazing to look back and see all the places she has been for work.
I like the pantone mug!
I have several from when I did sysadmin work. People would come to my desk to helicopter around me when stuff broke (one of the worst aspects of the job). They didn't contribute, they just hovered and drank coffee. Often they'd leave for a while and set their cup on my desk. Too often, it stayed there overnight. After 3 business days, I washed it and took it home. Some are funny, most are lame. I tossed some to the thrift shop and kept a few weird ones. All are reminders that I made the right decision when I quit that job.
Most of MY mugs (that I purchased) are 24oz travel mugs from Tim Hortons.
in college, i collected beer mugs for a bit. i ended up giving them all to my brother when i graduated.
Not intentionally. My clients seem to give me coffee mugs or baseball caps. The caps I can understand as I am in the outdoor rec business. I'm covered up in both.....
I've nearly bought this one a couple of times (gee, they're on sale):

Barbara and I have a haphazard collection of at least 50. Some are places- Moscow, Seattle, Calgary. Some are logo- Yankees, WNYC. Have a Route 66 mug, and a mug with B's granddaughter on it. No rhyme or reason- we just buy them when we get the urge.
Mugs are cooler than cups and saucers.
I've known some places that have had pretty shitty coffee...
