My termi's are a bit too loud on my 05 s4r.Possible to quiet them down a little ?

not sure if there is anything as too loud ! :-)

do you wear ear plugs ? I know my pipes are loud(and certainly not the loudest around), but riding with ear plugs is definitely required - not just for your sanity and concentration, but long term hearing. Otherwise, one of the more technical/mechanically minded members can suggest something I'm sure.

My father recently purchased a new exhaust for his bike, only to find it too loud as well.  He had a muffler shop throw a bit of pipe in there to quiet it down and it cost him $peanuts (they basically used a longer baffle than the optional bit that came with his Yoshimura pipe).

I would imagine you'd be able to have similar luck at your local shop.

FWIW, my Termis are pretty loud too, but they're basically lovely with the earplugs in.  If you're worried about your neighbors, I find the best solution is to first be on good terms, and then make sure you depart the premises post-haste.  ie: don't hang about, go be rumbly somewhere else!  =)

Geez you are an anti-social, social bunch. I didn't know you wore earplugs due to exhaust noise until I rode Jukie's bike ... earplugs are for wind noise.

Gino, first things first ... do they already have baffles or provision for baffles? Is it a full system or slip ons?

I think slip ons ? I took them off , had a look inside . Can see right through .On the inside it has hundreds of holes but nothing running through the centre.

Sounds like getting an exhaust shop to make up some baffles may be the go. Do you have any photos you could post up for our more learned colleagues to guide you?

Wish i could but haven't a clue how ! Who would i take it to in Syd . just want to take the edge off a little without compromising any power

Thanks for the reminder about the power, I was going to mention the tune of your bike - baffles may or may not have an effect. I would guess that if you are running only the slip-ons it may not have that much effect.

Not exactly from Sydney so I can't help much there ... someone else should be along to help out soon I hope.

I have CF termis, no baffles, oh sooo loud, love it, the plan is to eventually go deaf, then I dont have to listen to people complaining about how loud my pipes are!! [evil]

Gino it just sounds (no pun intended) like you need the baffles that should come with most exhausts.

correct me if I'm wrong (I don't have any baffles or noise reduction device)...but don't you look at the outflow pipe and termi's have a hole on the bottom where the baffle is screwed?

But on a less serious note i have seen something on the main forum
and some pictures of  Termi baffles recently get searching [thumbsup].

if you have the cat still in place the termis shouldn't be THAT loud, with db eaters in as well, it may end up close to standard as far as noise goes, nice to have the option though.

If it's slip ons like what i have then you are being a sook. They are bloody quiet! Not much louder than the stock pipes.

Well regardless of whether your opinion has any merit, I'm not sure calling Gino a "sook" is neither polite or appropriate.

Gino, I'll take a step and apologise for the post above  - our little corner of the DMF usually shows more manners, especially to new members.

Ok thats all cool. I can handle the flack , but its not me , neighbours ! between the open clutch (and thats staying !)and the termi's, their going to kill me .Sounds like i need a baffle , but dont see anywhere in there its going to bolt on even if i had one .yep a picture of one would be good.Anyone got a spare they want to sell?

see, there's the flaw in your thinking. neighbours? who cares about neighbours! none of mine talk to me, i've even got rid of them on either side of me recently, and while the new ones seem nice i've already had the dirty looks and unapproving scowls. lifes far too short to care about what other people think, besides, if they don't like it they can always move..........

p.s, if your termis have a hole on the underside of the outlet, that's where the insert gets held in place with a grub screw.

My neighbours don't mind my loud pipes at all. I am quite a polite neighbour though.
I'll start the bike, let it idle for about 30 secs, then roll down the hill. As long as I don't rev it hard I'm not upsetting anyone.

My Ti Termis don't...and that's the way god intended them to be  [thumbsup]

I push my bike up the driveway and halfway down the street if I am starting it before about 8:00am, then go warm up down the road at a servo. After 8:00, pricks use lawnmowers and whippersnippers and leaf blowers, so I reckon it's fair game starting up wherever.

There is a little allen key screw that goes through the bottom of the muffler to hold it in. They would be relatively easy to fabricate if you know anything about metalwork.


They cut the noise in half but they make the bike sound shit imo. I reckon it would have to cause some sort of performance drop (might just be a mental performance drop, can never tell)

Yeah I know what you mean. I do the same, and sometimes if I'm leaving real early or coming home late, the engine starts / gets cut up the street!

Well yep.I can understand that !

My dirt bike was WAY 2 loud, so I made a end piece from a stainless steel elbow that I cut to suit. It interupts the straight through flow without being restrictive, and drops the noise down abit.

The slip on termi's are barely louder than the stock pipes. When i spent $3k to put slip ons on my S4R i was very disappointed at how quiet they were. That's just the nature of slip-ons whilst the cat is still in place. Mine compared to the S4R w/full system (or in fact any Duc with a full system) is chalk and cheese. You can't even hear my bike over theirs  :(

gino - I feel your pain with the engine rattle. Winter warmup is the worst as i am out the front rattling my bones to pieces trying to get the temp up before setting off. For me the exhaust isn't the problem, it's the engine that i wish i could quieten down. Have you tried going back to the stock pipes at all?

Well ok, that's your opinion, and you're entitled to that.

Your point is certainly valid regarding the noise levels, I just didn't see the need to put it in the way you did - it only distracted me from the point you were making.

Anyway, back to the thread.

can't rememebr the northern bloke.....sprayed the inside of his clutch cover (full carbon) with a sound deadening paint which kept it quiet....that and they make more noise when they are warn, and aftermarket ones because of the precision are a lot quieter I've heard.

I put mine in neutral and roll into the garage! and then ride her gently in the morning for the first 5 minutes!
