Title: OEM springs
Post by: hackers2r on January 12, 2010, 01:06:11 PM
I am just curious about the OEM spring rates on my S2R 800.  If anyone has any information it would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I think I just found a post saying they are .45 progressive rate springs.  Can anyone confirm this?

I'd bet money neither front or rear are that light.

Front fork springs.
If they're progressive there should be two numbers.

im close to 100% sure that the front is progressive, and its probably too light on the light end, and not enough on the heavy end.

and the rear is around 7.8kg/mm, thats what my s2r1000 spring was suppose to be.

The front fork springs are progressive on an S2R800.

Rear spring is also.

I've never seen a 'rate' for them.

I'll check one, BRB.

What year S2R?  I have an '03 800 Dark (DSS) and I think we share the same non-adjustable Marzocchi fork.  My stock fork springs are definitely progressive and too light for me, no idea what the rates are.  I swapped them for straight rates from RaceTech.

I think we may have the same preload/rebound adjustable rear shock, but maybe not.  We do have different swingarms.  I know my rear linkage is progressive but the spring doesn't look like it is.  I could measure between all the coils to be sure.

Just checked an S2R1k fork spring.

It's showing as a .58/.79, with the transition point at about 2.5" of compression.
I wouldn't say that's a laboratory accuracy number, but within +/- 5% IMO.

That transition point occurs about where the forks are halfway compressed.

Wow, even the stiff part is pretty soft.  Thanks for some real world info on the springs.

can't wait to get my new forks on.
scared as hell of doing it myself... but whatever. worst thing that can happen is they fall off.

im going to swap an S2R1000 fork onto a 620. brakes and all. even new masters in about 10 days.

i dont mind setting up a cam. or snapping some pics if you need it. its really simple, nothing technical. just bolt off, bolt on.

Thanks for the info Speedog.  I too am swapping entire suspensions soon and am just wondering what to expect.  I'll post a write-up when it is completed.
