Title: Favor: Check out a bike
Post by: FastAndLight on January 13, 2010, 10:31:28 AM
I am currently in Iraq, but I have a project in mind for when I get back, and I was hoping someone could check out this bike for me:
http://www.cycletrader.com/find/listing/2005-DUCATI-999-96083739 (http://www.cycletrader.com/find/listing/2005-DUCATI-999-96083739)

It is at:
LA Motorcycle Salvage
425 E 58th St
Los Angeles, CA 90011

I know it is a wreck and that they are asking far too much for it, but without knowing how destroyed it is, it is tough for me to negotiate.  Basically I am going to be replacing the frame, tank, body work, gauges, intake, exhaust, ECU, lights...and pretty much everything.  Basically, I need a front end (mostly just the forks), an engine, wiring harness, brakes, wheels, rear suspension, and a few other odds and ends.  Any help is really appreciated.

I really appreciate it, but it looks like they are open Monday - Friday from 8 - 5.  Not exactly the easiest of business hours to try to see something.

I was in the neighborhood so I popped in to check this bike out.

Bad:
1. Subframe and aftermarket exhaust shot. Looks like header out of the can is tweaked but not sure. Couldn't tell if connection points to main frame where ok or not.
2. Fairings shot. Probably not repairable.
3. Speedo Cluster shot.
4. Controls are suspect. Master and clutch reservoirs look ok but everything else is gone or busted.
5. Swingarm is rashed badly on left side. Looks straight but really ugly.
6. Rearsets shot.

Good:
1. Frame looks ok.
2. Forks look straight. (Brakes and all tabs intact)
3. Wheels look good.
4. Tank has some rash but looks whole and not dented.
5. Engine looks solid and no visible damage from my quick inspection.

Looks like it was lowsided at track and ended up flipping as damage is on both sides. Wear on tires looks track oriented rather than street, hence my track assumption.

I am familiar with this shop and they always have their stuff way over priced (IMHO). I tried to buy a wrecked SV650 for a track bike and the guy wouldn't budge on a bike I could buy whole and clear titled bike for $500-750 more. So not sure if the guy is gonna show you much love on negotiation.

Good Luck.  Stay safe.

GregP, I really appreciate you taking a look at it.  Given that he doesn't have the black keys either, I have no idea why they think they can get $4600 for this wreck.  I also appreciate the background with these guys.  Hopefully it will help me negotiate or at least not bang my head against a brick wall.

No problem.  Like I said, I was in the hood and any reason to kick tires is good enough to stop in for a look.

They had a theft recovery 999/749 as well.  I couldn't immediately tell what it was as it was stripped to the frame.  No "damage" to the bike but all that is left is the Chassis, Engine, Suspension, wheels and brakes.  The biggest issue with the bike was the wiring harness and ecu were gone as well. "Professionally stripped" is the term he used so damage to the bike is minimal.  The helper didn't the asking price.

The stripped one sounds interesting.  It might be just what I need.  I'll have to ask for the specifics on that.  Thanks!
