it's the fear that holds me back
and the what if's

it's much easier to work for someone else
starting my own design firm is risky
what if the clients don't come?
what if i fail?

riding on the track, same deal
what if i fall an wreck my bike?
what if i fall and disable myself?

it's also the same with having a baby
what if...

i'm not sure if i'm ok with being a chicken,

but, it's where i'm at :)

Complacency, fear, previous bad decisions, lack of confidence, bald and overweight, I've got an endless list.  I'm going back to the venting thread.

Lack of confidence.

I am not afraid to fail.

It used to be the fear of failure.

Then it became the fear of success.

Now?

F*ck fear!

I'm balls-to-the-wall.  Burning the candle at both ends again and trying to light the mo-fo in the middle.

I'm off to the tattoo artist tonight to get a new one.

Mine would fall under my current career and finding a new one.

I am underpaid and overworked.

However, it is hard to leave a safety blanket of 6 years where i have really been my own boss.

If I go and find that new job, then I start all over again, and my safety net is gone.

So I guess what is holding me back is fear of change.

There is more than a little bit of that with my situation as well.  But having said that, I have grown tired of being in the service and am making my way to that door...

That is good you are making your way out of a "job" that you don't want to be in. I am sure fully getting out of the service isn't as easy as one would think, especially with current events.

Mine is as simple as finding a new job, giving two weeks notice, and leaving.

That is just it, it is the job that I really like; especially now that I have been focusing on CT issues.  The part that I do not like is the Air Force crap that goes with it.  They are so stuck in this extremely myopic way of looking at things and living "inside of that box" drives me crazy.

So, I have pretty much decided that I am ready to get out and do the same job as a civilian.  The money is better, and I will have FAR greater control over my life.  The bad thing is that I still have two years left before I can make that transition.

Most of it is now that I've got older the risks have gone up and I have more to lose. I always give the bird in the hand more weight than the two in the bush, especially when I have less time to make any losses up.

Now, I'm just trying to be realistic and setting things up to be able to retire while reasonably young and healthy, then move to a less expensive location post retirement and enjoy.

Excuses are holding me back, and a fear of not being able to provide for my family.

When my daughter gets in school I'll start something during the day.

I've worked hard to reach some level of success/means. Now I've got a wife and kid depending on me. Much harder to hit the reset button now. I've got overhead!

Having said all of that I've researched a variety of career changes over the years and am convinced there are downsides to all of the jobs you convince yourself are "perfect".

For now I'm happy the good far outweighs the bad.  And as the song goes, I'm workin for the weekend!

See-that's what's holding you two back. You're happy-there's no impetus to improve things. Embrace the inner misery!

Nothing holds me back but me. I'm pretty content. I should knock that shit off.

In a way, all of us have an El Guapo to face someday.
For some shyness might be their El Guapo
For others a lack of education might be their El Guapo
For us El Guapo is a big dangerous guy that wants to kill us.

i spent the first 40 years of this life desperately trying to get selected to the
astronaut corp.  It took one BS, two masters and a PhD before i figured out
that, as the old saying goes, "its not what you know, its who you blow".

for the last 8 years i've been a bitter shell trying to come to grips with fate.

they're full of sh!t.

Nothing.
Short of a few inconsequential incidentals, I am very content with my life.
I may not be rich, but I don't have to worry about people just liking me for my money.
I may not be pretty, but I don't have to wonder if she is dating me for my looks or my great personality.
I may not live in a giant house, but I don't have to vacuum 17 rooms.
I may not drive a brand new car, but my insurance is lower and I have no car payment.

You get the point. I am content where I am and anything above and beyond that is simply icing on the cake.

So I guess what is holding me back is fear of change.

I'd say fear of change as well.

I have a good paying and secure job as a design engineer in a field that I got a BS and MS in. Unfortunately it isn't all that interesting being a design engineer most of the time, and I have a hard time really applying myself when I'm only marginally interested. I'm not lazy...just bored.  :-\ I think I would enjoy working for a contractor (same field) more...and I could probably make more money doing so...but I'm "comfortable" where I am, work for a good employer, and my schedule is pretty flexible. I fear a contractor wouldn't be as flexible, and I'd probably have to move every 3-4 years as the projects change. I also fear that I'd feel the same. The jump is complicated by a 3-month old at home.

The problem as I see it is we go to college at 18, but it is very rare someone knows what they want to do by 18 years old...or even at 25! No wonder so many people dislike their jobs.

If I had it to do again I would have practiced my drums a hell of a lot more growing up...and tried to be a professional musician...maybe went to college to get a music education degree so at least I had something useful.

Ah well...so it goes. My advice to my son when it comes time will be to follow your heart first, a career second. Hopefully the two collide at some point.  [thumbsup]

Time is holding me back...

I recently finished my first semester back in school at 26.  Another year and a half + MCATs and hopefully I will be in medschool by 29.  I am older than most in my position, but I have found that A's come easier when you aren't out partying and drinking.  Maybe time has also helped me get to where I want to be...  I decided I didn't want to be in a position where I was 40, looking back and wondering "What if ?"

A year ago my life started to fall apart and all seemed to be lost.

I've moved on, my limits are the boundaries of my imagination and, unfortunately, the laws of physics.

There is much to gain and little to loose. I'm up for pretty much anything right now. I'll be back on the race track soon and I have a serious sponsor.

Life is good, and it's getting better every day that goes by.

Nothing really. Goal since I was a kid: start my own business. I went to school - BA + 2 Masters.

And my track record? I've started about 3 or 4. FAIL. Different ideas, categories, etc. One I screwed up, one no one paid me, one the partner screwed up. A lesson I learned - Employees you can fire, partners not so much.

I won't give up. I always have a scheme up my sleeve...  I forget the movie but I remember a line from it very well "I'm happy, but I'll never be content". That's me.

It was fear.  I was in a great but boring gov't job (like to call it the golden handcuffs) and wanted something different.  A bunch of stuff happened - death of my father and a divorce.  Quit the gov't job and started a consulting firm 3 year ago. No kids, no pets, no houseplants helps in making big jumps.  Would never go back..... That said, I took 2 years of planning and earning extra dough on the side doing remodeling to make the jump.  Still have yet to take out a business loan.  My advice to those who want change - plan, plan, and plan some more.  Don't get overwhelmed - take it in small bites and work towards your goal.

I still struggle with motivation at times.  Consulting has been much more engaging because projects are shorter and change often, which is nice.  Still have dreams of running off to "join the circus" or otherwise drop out entirely.

I have always struggled with contentment. I am much better at living in the moment, but still have flushes of wanting to grow my one man show into a business I could sell eventually.  Trade current freedom and good income for years of no freedom, but with the potential to cash out and not work anymore 5-10 years down the road.  It is a tough choice.
