Title: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: Popeye the Sailor on January 19, 2010, 04:11:33 AM 'cause it ain't worth it. Idk about the bay side, but the coast is getting hit hard-trees down, power out, real high winds and I'm fairly sure at one point, hail.
Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: desmoquattro on January 19, 2010, 04:23:00 AM I had to ride today. Street cleaning.....yeah, I know.
It was bad yesterday. I made the mistake of leaving the cover on the Yamaha, with the top case on as well. The cover acted like a sail and knocked the bike on its side in my company's San Mateo parking lot. Minimal damage...just a windscreen. But freaky. Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: Michael Moore on January 19, 2010, 05:48:20 AM I considered it, but my lovely wife gave me a withering, "are you some kind of idiot?" look that prompted me to see if the car is still in running order.
Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: Le Piou on January 19, 2010, 08:07:09 AM Today, I am glad my wife doesn't let me commuting daily on a bike.
"been there, done that" But I am too old for this shit now. Be carefull on the road, guys. Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: Spidey on January 19, 2010, 08:13:49 AM I was talkin' about this to the Blonde as we drove in today. Too many deep puddles/flooding out there to be traveling at anything close to freeway speed while on two wheels. You don't have much control when you're hydroplanig.
Tomorrow is gonna be worse as the ground is already saturated. Be safe, all. [moto] Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: mostrobelle on January 19, 2010, 08:20:12 AM Guess I'm in the "retarded" camp. Very windy, very rainy. Less than ideal riding conditions. [coffee]
I brought two pairs of gloves and socks so that I have a dry set on the way home. I'm golden. Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: mostrobelle on January 19, 2010, 08:33:39 AM a little bit... a few inches at the toll plaza and of course the Western span of the upper deck had it's usual standing water, as it always does whenever it rains. The wind blows harder on that side too. Worst part was just before the island--for some reason there are some really nasty updrafts there. It's disconcerting on the bike. It was so powerful that it blew rain up under my visor--which was snapped shut. WTF?! I kept my RPM up and my head down--seemed to work OK for getting through it.
Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: Desmostro on January 19, 2010, 08:48:58 AM Fek, then there's the lightning. Anyone else have their house rocked last night. Dang, the windows shook, trees blew over, I was looking out the window for the Wicked Witch of the West!

Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: enzo on January 19, 2010, 10:03:04 AM I got more wet walking from BART to the office than if I had just rode. The umbrella didn't do a lot of good, and of course the sun came out minutes after I got here...
Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: Drunken Monkey on January 19, 2010, 11:53:45 AM I rode in. Lots of deep puddles at the storm drains on the corners, but beyond that not a big deal (other than extra heavy traffic)
We'll see how the ride home goes... The wind flowing around the island creates a low pressure area at the base compared to the top. This causes the air to flow in the vertical plane. When I fly the approach to Oakland on a day like today you get a bumpy ride as you go over top of the island. Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: Popeye the Sailor on January 19, 2010, 07:28:05 PM It's pretty dang gnarly out here. Lots of rockslides, mud, rivers, and trees.
Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: mostrobelle on January 19, 2010, 07:29:53 PM Pick a bridge and cross it between 11 and 1 tomorrow. It's supposed to get ka-ra-zie. 60 mph gusts possibly. Doubt it'll get that windy on the Bay, but I'm pretty sure the gusts I felt today were 30 mph +. It'll do 40+ on the BB for sure. Woot! [popcorn]

(only 50lb+ ones... dogs, kids, etc)
Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: ducnymph on January 20, 2010, 11:11:03 AM I'm a big old wussie! I won't ride in this weather if you paid me! We need this rain, but I do wish it would clear up so I could get in one good ride and, hopefully, I can resume my daily commute soon. The bart/car commute sucks bad.
Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: MendoDave on January 20, 2010, 11:46:04 AM I remember the days without car, riding to and from work and everyplace else weather it was 105 or storming like this. Don't miss it much. but ya do what you have to do. My hats off to anybody that rides in this kind of weather. Just slow down and get there...
Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: mostrobelle on January 20, 2010, 11:51:41 AM I didn't ride today. Too much for me. [moto]

Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: Michael Moore on January 20, 2010, 07:16:36 PM Ugh. Two days of caging it is about driving me nuts.
Unless it's looking like the apocalypse outside, I'm riding tomorrow! Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: ROBsS4R on January 20, 2010, 10:35:40 PM I think I am going to hang up the bad weather riding so I am searching for a used car. I was able to work from home yesterday but I really should head into the office today. I will try to sneak to work between rain breaks if there are any. What have you been driving that's so terrible? 1968 Ford 3/4 ton P.U. with four speed & no P.S. with lots of slop in the steering with a heater that is stuck on cold or something? Or something newer & better? Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: Michael Moore on January 21, 2010, 06:43:36 AM What have you been driving that's so terrible? 1968 Ford 3/4 ton P.U. with four speed & no P.S. with lots of slop in the steering with a heater that is stuck on cold or something? Or something newer & better? '95 Acura Integra. The car's OK, actually it runs really well for a 15 year old car, but it's the being stuck in traffic I have no patience for anymore. I guess having a radio's nice though - it helps to distract you from the sitting in traffic part. Title: Re: I hope none of ya'll are on two wheels today Post by: jimboecv on January 21, 2010, 07:01:02 AM Lucky me ecvjr.'s sick so I get to sit today out.
Why wasn't he sick yesterday - my 30 min. commute took and hour via back roads. It has all kinds of bells & whistles to do distracting with. Maybe your Acura could use Garmin Nav system or something to help in that regard. I was rockin' the '62 ford with vacuum wipers. Yeah from 1am to 2am =) I have a place I can crash in Fremont sometimes. Anyways I thought I found a break in the weather but I was Wrong. The Ride was actually pretty pleasant even though it was wet and raining but I was nice and toasty with my heated liner. |
