hi there, on the monster s4r year 04 the stock front sprocket has a flat side and a "stepped out" in the shape of the splined retaining plate where the two bolts attach to. which side should face the outside to be bolted on to the retaining plate? appreciate if anyone can help.
i'd also like to change the gear ratio. would it be better to go one down in front (14T from 15T) or 2 up behind (42T to 44T). would there be any significant difference with just 2T up behind? thanks very much for the help.
Flat side on the front sprocket goes outboard.
Better to go larger on the rear.
It's not 'night and day' better, but if you're replacing the whole set, it's the superior way to go.
If you just want to try it out for cheap, then dropping to a 14t front is good.
Up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket is noticeable, but not a big jump.
thanks very much speedog. much appreciated [thumbsup]
I put over 10,000 mi. on a 14/44 on an S4r and absolutely loved it.
Got 34,000 on a 14/43 on an s4rs and love it as well.

thanks LA. good thing i saw your post coz i was just goin to start a new thread asking about the 14T/43T combo. i know most people only change the 14T front and the difference is negligible according to the gearingcommander that i found on the net. there's about 10% on the 14/43 combo. i assume that's a lot better and you should be the testimony.
what difference do you get between 14/43 and 14/44? i suppose the chain & sprocket life really goes down on the 14/44 combo, but what fun i must say !!!!!
appreciate your feedback. cheers.
