Title: 696 swingarm on M1000DS?
Post by: The Don on January 24, 2010, 10:47:45 AM
I'm a lover of the DSS monsters. How possible would it be to fit a 696 swingarm to a M1000 DSS. I know anything is possible given $$$ but would there be structural problems given the torque difference or do you think Ducati would over engineer the swingarm. And what other problem would there be, exhaust, suspension, etc. I don't have the $ to do it myself but thought it would make good discussion.

Suspension will require lots of work.

why?
if he tried to convert it to the old style suspension yes.
but the other way would be possible just neeeds a new shock mount point on the frame
or am i oversimplifying it

You'd need a shock too, or completely revalve and respring the stocker.

I imagine you'd need to remove the motor to do the work.

Then the frame would need to be painted/powdered.

As well as all the other little details we haven't even considered.

Just because you can say 'just a new shock mount' doesn't make it a simple mod.

It is simpler than going the other way though...putting a linkage style system on the M1100. ;)

The swingarm will bolt to the engine case easily enough.  Just use 696/1100 or S2R rearsets.  That was the easy part...

Shock for the 696 is offset left of the rear exhaust header.  You'd have to heavily modify your Monster frame at best to make it work with the upper shock mount (which would bisect the frame itself).  Not saying it isn't doable, but way too much work even for someone like myself.

Your best upgrade is of course the S2R setup.

The cool setup (and I know of someone doing now) is the '06 SportClassic DSS swingarm -- the upper shock mount wouldn't be as difficult as the 696 to fabricate / mount to the Monster frame. (just add a spud and reinforce)

I saw a Sport Classic swingarm for sale today and was thinking about how to mount it to a Monster frame.  Just idle thoughts, nothing more.  Is your customer using the single side shock like on the Paul Smarts or the dual shock swingarm like on the GT1000's and Sport Bipostos?

I wonder if you could swap one of the dual shock ones onto a hooped monster by fabbing a lower shock mount on it and using the old mounts for the hoop.
