Title: S4RS rear sprocket info needed.
Post by: ICON on January 26, 2010, 11:41:57 AM
Is going 2 up (45) in the rear the same as going 1 (14t) down up front? The S4RS is 15 front 43 rear stock gearing. I am running the 14 now and want to go back to 15 and add some teeth in the rear. Should I go 3 up or 2 up in the rear.

Also, is there another option to a rear sprocket instead of buying the Supersprox or  an expensive Sprocket Carrier?

Thanks.

I'd go 3...

If you have one of those small CF rear chain guards, there is not a lot of excess clearance.  I went up to 44, that was the largest I could find for the quick change setup.  It just misses rubbing the (I think shift tech) rear guard.  45/15=3  ;  43/14=3.07 so they are real close.  I have read (probably a big controversy like an oil thread) that you don't really want an even number, but a "hunting" ratio to make the chain wear evenly - it is probably an urban legend...  ???  no personal experience there.

Hum, I'm going to have to drill some new holes on my shift tech carbon for clearance. Thanks for the info.

43 / 14 = 3.071

3.071 * 15 = 46.07

So you would want a 46 to get the same ratio.

Supersprox and several different brands of quick-change carriers are available, and a few of the OEM style.

I'm currently 14/43 going to 15/46 when my chain wears out.  If you don't do much urban riding 15/45 would probably be fine.

Thanks to the replies, I decided to run Supersprox Stealth 15/46 from Monsterparts.com. Now my question to you is, what color should I buy. Gold, Silver or Shiny Silver? I have a New EK Gold Chain and my S4R is Black. Your thoughts please.

FWIW, I've been running 15/44 (i.e. up one at the rear) on my S4Rs for a while now. With nicely balanced throttle bodies, runs quite sweetly around town even on the stock ECU and exhaust.

Can't imagine why anybody would want to gear shorter unless they do lots of urban work, but that's just me.

The felt difference from stock is surprising.
