First and foremost, I've got plenty of experience to know what goes into a swap - I'm a ptrain engineer for a larg OEM. So, I don't need the typical "you'll need xxx you fawkin N00b!!!111!_ schooling. Instead, I'd like to go to school on the 900 motors...
I've done some reading, and they'll basically fit into any chassis with the correct fueling/ignition system, correct (sans the single sided swing-arm models). I May have a lead on a cheap salvage 620 that's strictly got motor damage...I'd want more power, and the 900 motors can be had fairly cheap. 944 is the hot CID size, but I'm iffy about the investment into that right now. I've built plenty of motors though and have tons of dyno/flow bench experience...porting of the heads?? Anyone delve into this themself??
They're all carbed, correct? What about their intake plenum mounting pad - can it be swapped for FI runners? Custom ECU here we come, but I'm just asking. Exhausts...what fits from different years? I can lengthen the main pipe easily, but what about the physical flange section that bolts/inserts into the head? I've read about ignition woes...fixes? common issues?
One thing I want to do is keep this cheap if I do it...a challenge I suppose for a mutt bike
Not much of an engineer here, but if it helps after 2000 the M900 runs on fuel injection, and other models too.
Good luck. Post pics.
Cheers
As slowkitty said, 2000 and after M900 is injected.
M900 engine only went through 2002.
620 exhaust header won't fit a 900.
AFAIK, all 900 headers will fit.
900 engines have both single phase and 3-phase charging systems, you'll want the latter.
Some have close ratio transmissions. I'd recommend getting a wide-ratio one.
Custom ECU is a fairly pricey route.
couple of things.
what is your budget if we can pry? it will help with the suggestions.
and all modern ducati motors fit in all ducati frames as far as motor/swingarm mounts. the key is 2valve vs 4valve for the swingarm. the 2valve motors have the swingarm bearings in the engine case, the 4v have it in the swingarm. you can machine the case to use a 2valve with a 4valve swingarm.
sometimes you have to make changes to the cross member near the intake depending on your configuration.
so essentially you could put a 2-valve air cooled motor into a superbike frame. check out http://ducati-kaemna.de/cms_en/tu_example.htm?&ct=28 (http://ducati-kaemna.de/cms_en/tu_example.htm?&ct=28) for their Demon!
To clarify the swingarm mounting points made above, it's not *exactly* the 2V and 4V that separates the swingarm bearings, it's the chassis:
Monster, SuperSport, SportTouring and SportClassic bikes have the bearings in the engine cases.
SuperBike, Multistrada, HyperMotard bikes have the bearings in the swingarm.

thanks. i thought the MTS had it but didn't know about the HM.
That's why i asked for sanity check earlier. Clearly need one now
i put a m900 carbed motor in a m600. worked nicely, used the aluminum swinger from the 900 and you should use the larger 5.5 inch wheel since your 620 will have the 4.5 inch. that, and different headers as mentioned above, annnndddd yeah thats it.

Well then...2000+ motor is what I want if I can get an ECU. If I can get some hardware that's unlocked, I can tune...have access to some of the best cal engineers in the auto industry, so that's an option. However, if I can get one with a stock ECU I'll go the route of PCIII likely.
Wide ratio transmissions...translation to years by chance?? Same thing with the 3 phase charging...I'm assuming that this was an upgrade made to later engines, correct?
Budget isn't really an issue I guess, but I'd like to keep it cheap. If this salvage bike is straight, and I can get a complete motor w/intake for less than 1k, then I'd have roughly 2.5k into it...and I think that'd be worth it. Plus, I enjoy doing things like this. There's going to be at least another 500 needed to get it together and tuned I'm sure as well....
I'm I dreaming on costs?? If its something where I can buy a bike for cheaper than I can do a swap, that's obviously the better choice as it'll come with upgraded suspension pieces...perhaps I should focus on finding a cheap 900 already together [cheeky] Think I just rationalized myself out of doing a swap like this...but I would appreciate info on the 900 as I've seen quite a few for cheap.

(Threadjack) Stew, I guess this means it wouldn't be a simple motor swap to take a 1100 from a Mulitistrada and put it into a Monster.

Correct....unfortunately. (/threadjack)

Do you mean CC size? ;D[thumbsup]
As far as the transmissions go, the carbureted M900 engines '94-'99 had wide ratio transmissions, injected M900ie '00-'02 had the close ratio.
Dunno what the year crossover was on single-phase to 3-phase.
'00 and '01 M900 had the early-style injection ECU, '02 had the same style as your 620, the IAW 5.9.

Yep, told you I was an engineer - most don't know what they're talking about anyway ;D.......guess that's what I get for reading cycle and auto forum stuff at the same time.

You can't be an engineer...
they all know everything...and wouldn't admit it if they didn't.
;D

One or both of the early years the ecu was injection only with ignition being the old Kokusan system IIRC.

My Oct 97 M900 is 3 phase and would have been one of the first.
98 on is a safe bet for 3 phase. Check you have 3 yellow wires from alternator.

1998 air-cooled engines were the first 3-phase charging system bikes. Water coolers had to make-due with the single phase until 1999.
As others have said, there are various things to watch out for to make it a more straight-across swap. If you just run across Terrific Deal A and Terrific Deal B and want to make something of the two, you can still probably make anything work if you try hard enough and have the right resources. I'm been slowly working on stuffing a '99 ST4 916 engine into an '88 Paso 750 frame and using a ST2/4 swingarm that is highly modified to match up to the Paso's suspension, but I'm into self torture....
One of these days, I'll get the one frame rail rewelded and then start assembling it and torqueing everything down. The two main issues I see in the future are getting the Paso tank modified to clear the wider head of the Desmoquattro vertical cylinder and arranging for a radiator system.
why a 916 motor on that? a 1000ds would have been sweet and maybe had fit better.
i may get flamed here, but i always liked the look of the Paso, so i'm very interested in seeing your project completed.
For about 3 weeks I had an overlap in my buying power that would have allowed me to get a 999S engine and wiring as well as an 1987 Paso 750. Temptation ran high for those 3 weeks.... [evil]

The ST4 engine becuase I got it locally for $900 with the TBs, ECU, wiring harness, and airbox. Throw in the fact that while I was rebuilding an '87 Paso 750 I kept picking up spare parts and people were even giving me things for free, and after selling a bunch of spares, I have less in the complete project with almost every part I need to build it for less than I paid for the just the engine.....and I still have spares I can sell.
My original idea was to cram a 900 carbie engine into the frame and see if I could build a *free* Ducati with my wheeling-and-dealing, but this project will be more interesting.....and have about twice the HP as a stock Paso 750. :o I'm shooting for a total project budget to be well under $1000, even after I paint it. I have no idea when I'll finish the bike with work, the family, and graduate school. I started stuffing the engine into that frame over a year ago and haven't touched it since last April.
