Hi. After years of SJMs (Standard Japanese Motorcycles), I'm a recent convert to the world of wrenching on Ducatis. I am hoping to do a valve job on a new-to-me 2003 Monster 800. I've been trying to find a workshop manual to guide me through, but all I have been able to find is the 2006 S2R manual. Will this manual be applicable to my valve job? Does anyone know where I can find an '03 manual? Many thanks.
Or, if a manual is not available - could someone let me know the valve clearance specs please. Thanks in advance.
me too...
Not 100% so wait for some more verification.
1.) Pretty sure the years don't matter on the manuals, at least not for the S2R line provided you get the correct one for the 800 or 1000.
2.) http://duc.nu/ (http://duc.nu/) has pdf versions of the manuals for cheap. Very good quality.
3.) How-to video by Chris at California Cycleworks, very helpful. http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=669.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=669.0)
4.) I am also pretty sure that the valve tolerances for the 2V bikes is all the same, here are the ones from the S2R1K:
| Adjusting Clearance | Checking Clearance |
| Opening Rocker - Intake | 0.10 to 0.15mm | 0.05 to 0.15mm |
| Opening Rocker - Exhaust | 0.10 to 0.15mm | 0.05 to 0.15mm |
| Closing Rocker - Intake | 0 to 0.05mm | 0.0 to 0.20mm |
| Closing Rocker - Exhaust | 0 to 0.05mm | 0.0 to 0.20mm |
As I understand these numbers, you are aiming for the Adjusting Clearance numbers when actually replacing the shims while the Checking Clearance numbers are the running tolerances?
Just did my first valve check last weekend and am replacing the belts and adjusting the valves this weekend. I was really intimidated by the idea. Getting in there, I was quickly comfortable and can't wait to try to get my valves back to spec.
valve clearances are pretty much the same throughout all 2v motors.
the s2r 800 and m800 share the same engine. so that manual would work fine for the most part
