Title: 25mm to 17mm Rear Wheel Conversion - How?

All - I have a '95 monster and am looking at swaping a hollow axle rear to it - before I  get into somthing I regret is this just a simple bearing swap or do I need to machine the wheel/Carrier to make it fit?  Does anyone know?

If you want to go from a 17mm rear axle (or is it a 20mm?) to a hollow 25mm rear axle, you'll need:

1) Rear swingarm (the holes in the stock swingarm for the stock axle is too small)
2) Chain adjuster blocks
3) New wheel bearings and spacer for a 25mm axle
4) Rear brake caliper bracket
5) spacer that goes between the sprocket carrier and swingarm
6) bearings for the sprocket carrier
7) and......that's all I can think of off the top of my head

Another issue you may have is that a swingarm for a 25mm axle probably won't bolt up to the earlier (851 style) rear suspesnion, so you'll need to get the swingarm modified or the fram modified for the newer rear suspension.

Now that I have you frustrated, you can probably machine the slots in the stock swingarm for the 25mm axle. Also, you may be able to drill out the chain adjuster blocks and the rear brake caliper bracket. I'd just buy a new sprocket carrier/swingarm spacer and all the necessary bearings and wheel hub spacers.

Edit - Not knowing the thickness and OD of the bearings necessary, there may be a possibility that the hub will need to be machined 1-2mm in diameter for new bearings. I believe that an early 90s SS900 fornt wheel would need to be machined down for the 17mm front axle of a Ducati Paso, so depending on the year of wheel and the dimensions, there may not be a bearing availble with the dimensions that you will need.

Might be better just to pursue a different avenue.

Are you trying to fit a 25mm axle, or a wheel that originally used a 25mm axle onto your 17mm axle?

Desmo Demon's pretty much got the "fit 25mm axle" bases covered.

If you're trying to fit a 25mm axle wheel onto your 17mm axle, then no, it's still not quite as easy as a bearing swap. The bearings that fit the 25mm axle only come in sizes with different widths to the 6203 bearings the 17mm axles use (there's some useful info about wheel bearing sizes in the OEM bits thread in Tech on TOB). From memory the 25mm id bearings are narrower by a few mm so you'd at least need to make custom wheel spacers up to make everything line up right, and you _might_ need to machine out the bearing wells in the wheel to get the needed space - which'd mean modifying the spacer that goes between the two bearings too. I'm not sure whether the 25mm axle wheels will line up with the 17mm axle sprocket carriers either, I suspect they would, but I'd be wanting to spend a bit of time with a set of calipers and the bits in hand before I payed too much money for any now bits...

Yes converting a wheel that takes a 25mm axle to a wheel that fits on a 17mm axle (I am going to retain the 17mm axle).  I believe the carrier does not align and does require some machine work to make it all work.  - All the info I have is from reading posts and asking questions.  The general consensus it that its not worth it - Better off just to find a wheel that fits.

Aaaahhhh....Looks like I misunderstood what you were trying to do. Tell you the truth, it is cheaper....MUCH cheaper...to sell the 25mm wheel on ebay and buy another wheel for the 17mm axle. Replacing the bearings (two for the wheel and two for the sprocket carrier) and buying/making new spacers for the hub will cost you more than another complete rim from eBay. If you have time to wait, you can find some good deals.

Why do you want to do the wheel swap?

I was going to score the Foggy 5 spokes listed in the for sale section to replace the orig 3 spokes.  I've been on the hunt for a while now to upgrade the factory rims.
