Title: Group buys
Post by: mattyvas on January 31, 2010, 09:30:31 PM
Just an idea after chatting to a few people this week.
With the folk coming onto the board and much talk of shiny jewelery for your bike, aka Bling.

Perhaps group buys of items might be a great way to maximize our collective buying power.
We could have a Rizoma month or Carbon month or a Billet month. You get what I mean.

It's just an idea not a must but I just thought it would be a good way to get the best deals possible.
After the talk of local suppliers etc, I was still shocked to see the price of Rizoma rearsets from the local VIC re-seller.

tell you guys what....I'm picking up my bike from the tuners tomorrow and we were talking about how cheap PC3's are....I could ask and you could have a PC3 month!

Matty, sorry to hear Rizoma didn't turn out, I was hoping there'd be enough fat to trim a little to make everyone happy...oh well....by oS and be guilt free about it...but always give the local a go!

It's not that Rizoma didn't work out for me, it's that some things are comparable to buy here from Bikecraft in VIC.
For instance indicator $78 each here, $41 each US. So I can see that buy the time they are shipped you are paying close to that for them here.
But $998 for rearsets when they are $515 US, that makes a difference.

I'm just putting it out there that if we all made public our wish lists and bought from the same supplier each time our $$$ might go further.

Have been pricing Rizoma in last week, Bikecraft $2300 (Brad did mention discount for total order waiting to here back final price) Reva Corsa $1760 after conversion. Own my own small business so would like to support Bikecraft, if we can all order more with our Aussie guys they may be able to get a better deal from OS.

Carbon chain guard for SS (usually 2 expensive little pieces....)

I need to find someone who has rearsets on their bike to see if they would suit me.  I have a habit of riding with my feet on the pillon pegs when doing highway miles. Not real safe I know - but comfortable.

That's what I'm talking about Caz, a $540 difference is pretty substantial.
I'd be thinking that a serious amount to discount.
But then I guess it be different if we went to him and gave him a $10k order and said righto then let's deal.

Heather I'm sure at Tourismo you'll find a bike to test out, but really anything is going to give you more options than stock
rearsets.

Gino what rearsets are you looking for, Rizoma or something else.
If we are going to start with Rizoma month let's see what can be pooled together as an order.

I,ll have a look at Rizoma tomorrow and get back to you . If their a good price they have to be good!

I don't even want to know how this is possible (I've removed mine) but you can ride my bike next time were going somewhere!

I got told about a DOCV ride happening in Feb?

So if we're starting off with Rizoma then.

I might be up for indicators.

These will look good on your bike Matty...

I'll give the Rizoma group buy a miss but as I alluded too in a previous post, I will be interested in a Carbon one.

Yes me to DosVerde, also need some Carbon, has anyone seen the Carbon Streetfighter style closed clutch cover, its apparently fits the M1100s.

It's surprisingly easy (if you have pillion pegs  [laugh]) it probably helps that I don't have exceptionally long legs.

DOCV ride from Hurstbridge to Trawool 20th Feb according to their website. Or they have their multi day mini turismo in early March.

If we are talking group buys, why dont we buy something that we all could use ?!

Oil filters........ yep I know they are not as pretty as your carbonbilletrizoma's but we all use them, I personally use the K&N (kn-153) as I like the little nut welded on the end of them, much easier to remove. I would'nt know who or where to ask in the states but surely a box of filters wouldnt be to hard to flog, I just paid $23 at MCA's I wonder how much they are in the states.
What say you all ???

OK, one can of 'chromebright' for DosVerde.

Practical, yes, but still a good idea.

or how about a big shipment of cam belts - mine need replacing I think  ;D and a new rear tyre - no money for bling  :( YET!  ;)

Mmick for about the same price I have seen the K&N oil filter from UK or US - and that is AUS dollars. So not sure how much more you can save. [thumbsup]

+1 for cam belts

Think mine need doing too (to be on the safe side...)

there's a few variants on the cam belts, i'd hate to be divvying them up and get it wrong, especially if they got fitted......oil filters though, that's a great idea! maybe even a group buy on genuine ones here in oz, i'll bet i could get a healthy price on a box of em.

haha was about to ask a silly question but of course there is!  I am sure we have enough 'variants' to warrant a possible bulk purchase on the variations???  ??? ;D ;D

+1 on the oil filters...

another suggestion might be the soya bean degreaser / cleaner stuff you can only get in the US - it has some seriously good reviews on its effectiveness... they'll ship it here, but a case of 4 cans of the stuff costs $22 and $45 to ship!

OK I hate to get all practical on you guys but how would this work, not necessarily saying it won't, but how?

Oil filters for example ... if Mick can get them for $23 from MCAS, how cheap are you expecting to get them? Half price? Then how will they be shipped and who to? Who takes the money? Who pays and who handles all the logistics? It won't take long before it is not worthwhile IMO.

Sounds pretty tough on such a (relatively) low cost item ... and do the new Monsters use the same filter?

Goldie's idea of the cleaning goop might be a better idea ... something not available here, relatively cheap but a huge shipping cost ... payment and logistics issues would still need to be sorted.

With regard to the belts how many different types are there? This may make more sense as the savings (compared to local prices) may be more substantial ... they should be pretty easily shipped. But what are the shelf life of belts?

With regards to blingy bits ... this may always be tough as everybody has different tastes, budgets and quality expectations (yes I'm looking at you Unge) but perhaps more importantly timeframes are often all over the place. I am interested in seeing how all this develops.

Signed,
Miserable Party-pooper [cheeky]

here's a thought.

what about doing alternative months,a bling buy month then a maintenance buy month and so on..........

I'd be up for the filters.

I agree with you here, I don't think we could get oil filters much cheaper but the KN-153 does fit a LOT of Ducatis http://www.knfilters.com/search/applications.aspx?Prod=KN-153 (http://www.knfilters.com/search/applications.aspx?Prod=KN-153)

Also too whilst we are making a wish list no one has mentioned any logistics, payment etc?  Who is putting their hand up for that?  Do we leverage the local sponsors in hoping they keep the stock for us?
With regard to the belts how many different types are there? This may make more sense as the savings (compared to local prices) may be more substantial ... they should be pretty easily shipped. But what are the shelf life of belts?
From my understanding there are variations between a 620 belt and a 900 belt.  Probably best explained in the CA Cycleworks website http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/exactfit/ (http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/exactfit/)
another suggestion might be the soya bean degreaser / cleaner stuff you can only get in the US - it has some seriously good reviews on its effectiveness... they'll ship it here, but a case of 4 cans of the stuff costs $22 and $45 to ship!
Never heard of the stuff - and sounds like being very environmentally friendly to the planet too - or is it just for the vegetarians amongst us to use??  ;D

another reasonable suggestion!  [thumbsup]

I am happy to source products from anywhere in bulk lots if you all decide on what you want in particular, i have no problems with handling the import and distribution.. just let me know what you all decide on and i can approach the manufacturers and see what price we can land and supply them for, then they can simply be purchased through our website and posted out..

that's why i paid the money to be a sponsor, and i am local so if there's any issues they can be resolved.

Michael

Betty what's going on with you, so down on the idea.

remember we have done it before when we got ye'ol DML shirts.....
It was a national thing and everyone paid and got there shirts. I must say that yes it was a massive job but then
this also included a greater number of people.

As far as I know all Ducati's use the same filter, so this wouldn't be a problem.
Delivering things well I think it would work best by sending items to a central place and splitting things up from there.
If they were delivered to Melbourne, people could just gather and collect items then the left overs be sent to other centres.

We all see and know each other enough to meet up and collect our items.

The Soya Bean stuff sounds good, I know I have always been looking for a good cleaner and not found anything I have
really like or thought worked well.

Remember what I said in the beginning, it's just an idea.
If it's too hard then we can just go it alone.

Betty what's going on with you, so down on the idea.

Just ignore me I'm a grumpy bum. I just wasn't sure how much thought had gone into logistics.

Which is why I thought the filter was a prime example ... saving a couple of bucks but then having to travel across town and coordinate with someone for pick up seemed like a false economy. For us its actually cheaper to have things shipped rather than travel in to town to get them ... and that doesn't even factor in the time involved.

I was also thinking of the shirts when I typed my last comments. I know it was a huge undertaking (and I'm grateful) but also thought that was part of the reason we don't have an Ozmo DMF shirt ... somebody has to be willing to take all that on. You don't want to get held up waiting for so-and-so's payday or realise that you have over or under-estimated delivery costs after everybody has paid ... assuming it is all being done without profit it becomes a very delicate balance to get things right. Even then the intermediaries may fail to recognise your non-profitness.

By all means carry on but I just don't see the value in small cost items ... but then if it gets to more expensive items you may have customs to deal with, etc, etc.

I have always been a pessimist ... and prefer to keep my eyes open to potential 'issues'.

Title: Re: Group buys
Post by: mattyvas on February 02, 2010, 04:30:56 PM
Hey look I agree, filters might sound good but unless they can be bought at close to a 50% saving it's not worth it.

I was thinking of this being something for larger cost items, discussion has followed and people have put there ideas forward.
As usually happens on OzMo's which is why we like it.

It's good that someone is thinking of final logistics and getting parts/items out to respective orderee's
If it happens then great and Ozducati has offered to help us source and send items if we wanted to do it via him.
He is already set up to get items out so it's certainly a viable option.

Again as I said in the beginning it's an idea.
In any case right now I still don't have a running bike! So my $$$ is going to finding out it's problem and have it run again.

Dear Miserable Party Pooper (aka Grumpybum) thanks for stating the bleeding obvious without solutions, I think the idea has merit and it looks like a few of the good folk here are at least fleshing things out, Ozduc has put up his hand to help (onya Mick) and hopefully with a bit of discussion we may find that we can/not do this, at least we can have a bit of verbal intercourse along the way.
As Matty said its just an idea, and a good one at that.

Dear Miserable Party Pooper (aka Grumpybum) thanks for stating the bleeding obvious without solutions

I wasn't pretending to come up with any solutions ... and from what I can see, until Oz's suggestion nobody else was ... lots of grand ideas but no plans and thats all I was really asking for.

Please ignore my previous posts and proceed as you see fit.

OK I hate to get all practical on you guys but.....

oh, this is going to be good, he wants to talk to Ducati owners about practicality!

I guess next weeks lesson will be about fiscal constraint.

this will be a laugh  [popcorn]

I think you're being a bit too practical  ;) Can we at least get them in chrome .... or carbon???????

OK Dos, ask and ye shall recieve.

K&N oil filter to fit your Monster in Chrome(sorry there was no chrome or silver in 'change colour') is part No KN-172C It is slightly shorter and the internal specs are a little different, but it goes to show if you want something someone will make it for you.

HEY!! BETTY dont take it personally  [thumbsup]

Had a chat with our old mate in the states (DesmoQuattro) and he tells me that he buys the K&N (kn-153) for $14 retail, he is going to make some enquiries and I would assume let us know.

Might work, might not, never know unless we have a go !

Hey what happened to Rizoma month Mattyvas I thought you where keen, anyway could not wait ordered from Bikecraft today, they could get all the parts I needed without any trouble, Rever Corsa did not list all on site, and takes a while for reply with time difference. In the end the cost was not that much more and if any problems dealing with local (aussie) business to sort out.

No problem Caz, hope it goes well for you.
Paul (from memory) at Revercorsa might take a few days and not always do they list stuff on the site.
I asked after a few things and he had them but just not listed.

Anyways I'm kinda busy sorting out my none running bike.

Group buys also work better with more than two people buying, if it's just you and me then that is not very convincing
when it comes to buying power. I'd say the minimum number would be 5 orders.
Guess that's why it might take some organization.

So happy Rizoma party when your gear arrives.

Have not posted any pics yet so maybe a before and after, hopefully good weather this weekend for pics.
