Title: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: ROBsS4R on May 29, 2008, 05:10:37 PM I filled up my tank yesterday and it took 3.564 Gallons [thumbsup] I am pretty sure my tank is a 3.6er Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: NAKID on May 29, 2008, 05:12:41 PM What year is your S4R? I ran OUT of gas in my S2R before and put in 3.3...
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: ROBsS4R on May 29, 2008, 05:16:37 PM Its a 05 Metal tank of course =) If that makes a difference.
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: KnightofNi on May 29, 2008, 05:52:11 PM what if i did run out of gas? am i disqualified from this thread?
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: ROBsS4R on May 29, 2008, 05:54:58 PM Quote what if i did run out of gas? am i disqualified from this thread? Yeah. Thats to easy to win. Closest to running out wins free bacon ;D Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: NAKID on May 29, 2008, 06:00:19 PM Yeah, it does make a difference. After 05 they went to the same plastic (smaller capacity) tanks as the S2R...
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: MikeZ on May 29, 2008, 06:11:29 PM My bike started sputtering as I pulled into the gas station last year.
Don't want to cut it that close again. Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: Popeye the Sailor on May 29, 2008, 07:48:18 PM Yeah. Thats to easy to win. Closest to running out wins free bacon ;D Nonsense-where does that leave those of us who've sputtered into the gas station? Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: He Man on May 29, 2008, 08:13:18 PM 5 blocks from gas station. The bike died on a turn (city block so i wasnt goin more than 3 mph) and when i started her up again, she was running super lean i guess casue she idled at 3500rpm. I got her to speed, killed the engine, and jsut rolled to the gas station. Still couldnt pass 3.2 gallons though. wtballs. stupid gas tanks. My old bike held 3.8!!!!
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: DesmoDog on May 29, 2008, 08:23:34 PM 2005 Motogiro d'Italia, no idea where I am and I know the Monster I'm on is going to need gas soon. I tell the guide - yeah, sure no problem. We take off. No gas stations. Yellow light starts flickering, no stations. Light's on steady now. No station. Climbing a hill, the engine stumbles, I move over to the shoulder, the engine dies just as I crest the hill. Dead engine, coast down the hill... right into the gas station. Rolled right up to the pump.
No lie. It was Italy. Things just have a way of working out in Italy. Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: Bick on May 30, 2008, 07:13:25 AM Started sputtering < 5 yds from the pump.
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: the_Journeyman on May 30, 2008, 07:41:26 AM How about pulling into the parking lot after a field trip and having a 9-ton diesel stall as you roll into the parking space?

Post by: the_Journeyman on May 30, 2008, 08:24:18 AM So you had a lot of kids to help push the bus? Unloaded already [laugh] I was mostly in the parking space, so I just left it ~ JM Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: 38 OFF on May 30, 2008, 09:17:19 AM Put 3.28 gallons into my 3.3 gallon tank. Or something along those lines last fall.
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: Popeye the Sailor on May 30, 2008, 09:44:43 AM Well heck, you can't get *all* the gas out of the tank anyway. Theoretically, you can never run out. Given that, I ran it dry on the way home from zeitgeist. And I'm close to Rob, who wants me to work on his bike, Therefore I win.
Now bring me my bacon and yer wobbly sidestand issue, because it'd be a shame if I was hungry and yer bike fell over. (I am so not above blackmail) Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: toaster on May 30, 2008, 09:58:20 AM ive never come too close on the ducati since it has a nice little yellow warning light. but in other stuff, i have come really close and sometimes too far. i have run dry on my ktm 2 times now (no reserve on the petcock, just on/off but a new petcock with reserve is only $28), and in my car i put 12.4 gal into a 12.5 gal tank. then there was this one time i pulled into a gas station in my moms ford ranger, i killed it and it wouldnt start because it was out of gas even though the tank had just now gotten to the E line. i ran out in my camaro when i was 16, and not too long ago i had my dads truck stumble coming away from a red light so i made a quick turn into the gas station.
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: Popeye the Sailor on May 30, 2008, 09:59:23 AM When I ran out.....it's cause my little yellow light stopped working. There's one sure way to decide it's not working. I wouldn't trust it.
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: cyrus buelton on May 30, 2008, 10:04:02 AM I ran out pulling in to work earlier this year
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: Pakhan on May 30, 2008, 10:17:40 AM I ran out of gas on my old honda right before reaching the peak of the bridge I was on. I learned many things that day. My mechanic likes to use my gas (dropped it off with half a tank), none of the emergency phones on that bridge work, emergency bridge services noticed the problem and only got to me once I was off the bridge, and pushing a bike made in 1965 up hill for 1 mile to a gas station on a summer day in leather really sucks.

Post by: Ducatista on May 30, 2008, 04:55:53 PM I was pulling into my future xbf's apartment complex and noticed that the bike was running like poop. I can't see the idiot light in the daytime and I just happened to glance down at my trip odo to see that I was at 159.3 miles as the motor gave its dying gasp in his driveway.
Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: the_Journeyman on May 30, 2008, 05:17:40 PM Sounds like my *way too fast* blast down a deserted stretch of divided 4-lane highway on the GS1150 I sold... As I rolled off the throttle, it didn't sound right, it didn't respond good, and started running like crap. In my mind, I'm going "dammit, this is a 23 year old bike, what have I killed..." Then, remembered it had a reserve tank & I reached down and flipped the petcock over and a couple minutes later it ran fine ~

Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: Doctor Woodrow on June 02, 2008, 11:21:00 AM Ran out of gas in a 12-ton diesel freightliner idling AT THE PUMP. Rolled up, put the brake on, and it died. Looked in the tank and it was DRY. I put in 42 gallons of diesel at about $3.00/gallon, ouch.
With a full load in the back pushing was NOT going to be an option . . . The Doc Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? Post by: OwnyTony on June 02, 2008, 12:10:13 PM I dont remember how much gas i put in the tank but i have "ran out" of gas on the highway. All of a sudden, the engine cut off while i was doing 85-90 in the HOV lane of a 4 lane highway. I coast down to around 50 and hit the starter to try to start the motor(let me tell you, changing lanes UNDER speed is NOT something you want to do when all the cars are going 20-30 mph faster than you). Im able to get it to start back up and I slowly throttle it up the exit ramp. All the while im thinking i would really hate to push the bike up the ramp. I ride (not coast, engine was still running on fumes) into the gas station.
Does this count? Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? It took me a while to find neutral so I could flip the reserve lever over. Didn't freak out at the time, but afterwards I realized that being on the highway at 60-70 with no power and fiddling with little levers under the tank isn't the safest of positions to be in. I know what you mean but think about running out of gas when you have the reserve switch engaged. What do you do then? Our monsters dont have a reserve switch, its basically holding in the clutch, repeatedly pressing the starter button and hope you have enough speed , gas (more like fumes) and room to switch from the HOV lane to the lane that will get to you an exit ramp. At least with a reserve switch, you have to option of tapping into more power (tapping into a "reserve" gas source). It is a whole lot more comforting to know you have an option that will allow you to have access to enough gas to get to a gas station. To run dry and run on fumes, your options are now considerably limited. Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? I've been lucky so far, I usually start mad gas station hunting on the monster at around 120 miles, whether my fuel light comes on or not. Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ? I usually do the same. If i remember correctly, it ran out at around 130ish miles from that one tank of gas ( figured I had at least another 10 miles of gas left). I usually fill up when i hit 120 miles and know that i have roughly .5-.8 gallons of gas left. I was heavy on the throttle that particular week and it only lasted 10 miles over the 120 mile limit that i usually follow. Title: Re: Closest ever coming to running out of gas ?
