Title: Revalving Shock
Post by: ajw85 on February 12, 2010, 05:13:59 AM
Hey guys, I'm kind of lost about all this suspension stuff so I am looking for some advice from people who have done suspension upgrades before...
I am a solid 215lbs with gear on. I know that the stock components for the Monster aren't made for riders who weigh 215lbs. I also know that the stock Monster shock is preload and rebound adjustable, but that is it.
After reading the Ducati Up North site about suspension (http://www.ducati-upnorth.com/tech/suspensionspring.php (http://www.ducati-upnorth.com/tech/suspensionspring.php)), I understand that having the suspension properly set up for my weight would require me to revalve the shock and replace the stock spring, and I also see that none of the. I am not concerned with respringing the shock as springs aren't that expensive and I can do the labor to install it myself, but I am concerned with the cost of revalving a shock.

Has anyone had an OEM (Monster, 748,749, etc) shock revalved?
How much did it cost?
Was it worth it?
Can you justify not spending the additional $ for an Ohlins or Penske aftermarket shock?

I got caught up in the excitement of an eBay auction and purchased a 748 shock for super cheap, and I'm wondering if that was a bad purchase considering all the work involved with revalving a shock.

Please let me know your experiences.
Thanks!

If you want your stock shock resprung and revalved ducvet is your man.

Do inspect the chrome on the piston shaft first.  If the chrome is worn the shock is toast.

I am only 160 w/ gear and was able to get away with just a respring and it's great.  Talk with Ducvet and he can tell you what will work best for your weight/budget.  He really knows his stuff. [thumbsup]

I need some clarification,
Race Tech states that the Monster spring is 178mm (7") long.
http://old.racetech.com/evalving/SpringRateCalculation/dirtspring.asp?brand=Ducati&yr=99-01&ml=750%20Monster%20Dark&formuse=form1&SpringType=Fork (http://old.racetech.com/evalving/SpringRateCalculation/dirtspring.asp?brand=Ducati&yr=99-01&ml=750%20Monster%20Dark&formuse=form1&SpringType=Fork)

Race Tech also states that the 748 spring is 178mm (7") long.
http://old.racetech.com/evalving/SpringRateCalculation/dirtspring.asp?brand=Ducati&yr=97-01&ml=748&formuse=form1&SpringType=Fork (http://old.racetech.com/evalving/SpringRateCalculation/dirtspring.asp?brand=Ducati&yr=97-01&ml=748&formuse=form1&SpringType=Fork)

Penske states that the 748 spring is 6" long.
http://www.penskeshocks.com/Motorcycle-Spring_Chart.php (http://www.penskeshocks.com/Motorcycle-Spring_Chart.php)

Ohlins states that the DU-143 fits the 748.
http://www.ohlins.com/Our-products/Motorcycle/Products/Hypersport/DU-143/ (http://www.ohlins.com/Our-products/Motorcycle/Products/Hypersport/DU-143/)
Upon further research, this unit comes with an Ohlins    01091-19 spring
http://www.rmrsuspensions.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18 (http://www.rmrsuspensions.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18)
Ducati Up North states that the 1091 means that the spring has a length of 160mm (6.3")
http://www.ducati-upnorth.com/tech/suspensionspring.php (http://www.ducati-upnorth.com/tech/suspensionspring.php)

Who is right?

Also
Motostrano / MrSuspensions states that the Monster shock assembly is 305mm in length.
http://www.motostrano.com/dumoohresh.html (http://www.motostrano.com/dumoohresh.html)

Motostrano / MrSuspensions also states that the 748 shock assembly is 305mm in length.
http://www.motostrano.com/ohdu74919999.html (http://www.motostrano.com/ohdu74919999.html)

Yet I thought the Monster shock assembly was 310mm in length?

SBK rear springs are shorter than early Monster springs.

I just measured my OEM shock and it is indeed 310mm center to center.  It came off a 2008 DSS M800S.

Another question,

Is the spring rate dependent on shock design or the frame design? In other words, when purchasing a new spring for a 748 shock installed on a Monster, do I buy spring with a length of 160cm and at the rate suggested (@215 lbs) for the 748 which would be 8nm or do I buy a spring at the rate suggested for the Monster which would be 10.5nm?

Buy the length for the shock and the weight for the bike. The spring rate changes due to linkage differences,

Keep in mind the valving for the shock is somewhat dependent on spring rate. You may have issues with rebound.
