Title: Reverse engineering GXSR fork swap
Post by: djrashonal on February 14, 2010, 07:54:51 AM
So when I bought my bike a GXSR fork swap had already been done and the GSXR internals replaced with Matris internals. I was wondering what, if any, benefits there would be to reverse engineering the swap back to stock ? or replacing with SBK forks that I have seen members do? I know the Matris forks would fetch a few pennies and i could use the proceeds to fund the reverse swap, but is there a benefit? Would there be anything better?....just tryin to pick some brains.....(insert zombie comment here)

No reason to switch back. The internals make the difference, and you've got good internals. Switching back to stock would be expensive and a down-grade.

People switch to superbike forks for the same reason your previous owner switched to GSXR forks - bigger/better valving and adjustable settings.

Ok, Thanks for the heads up. I now have a followup question: since the front end gsxr swap was done, do i then have to buy gsxr levers to go on my NISSN MC's? Can I powder coat or anodize the Gsxr forks? thanks for the help

yes gixxer levers
yes powder or preferably anodize but they would have to be gutted

i looked up the prices and they are high (for my budget) I think matte black vinyl may be the way to go!

thanks for the help!

Yes, vinyl wrap is a good budget idea -- powdercoating forks is kind of a no-no - too difficult to get them into triples with the extra thickness and not scratch your fresh paint. Ano is the best solution.

Note, you do not have to retain the Nissin M/C unless you just like it. Its likely a radial unit which is good, but if it isn't, consider grabbing a Radial master cylinder from a Ducati superbike, Brembo RCS or GP series, Magura, ISR, Discacciatti or Spiegler. Clearly there are lots of options. But the lever has to go with the master, a brembo uses brembo levers, a nissin uses nissin levers, etc. You should be able to find lots of billet aftermarket levers for the gsxr master cylinders as well. That will give you options like length of lever, folding or rigid, and color.

yikes, that's a squidly bunch.  You should be able to get some pazzo levers with free grips from motomummy, that is if you keep those masters like ATO said

So the Nissin M/Cs are radial but i kind of want to go with the coffin style M/Cs.  I did some research and the main reason people switch from axial to radial is that the force is applied differently (directly onto the piston with radials, instead of using a fulcrum point with the axials) any other reasons to stay with radials?

Huge advantage in feel because of the axial pulling direction. Going to a coffin, axial m/c is a downgrade. If you are going to go Coffin, go to a 999 style coffin.

do you know if the 999 m/cs with the coffin res are radial or axial?

radial. they are at a bit of an angle, but the action is radial. axial is like the old Brembo Goldline masters, and the black coffin masters.

Look for them on eBay or, better yet Gotham Cycles.
