Title: Almost done w/ repairs and mods... but tank is loose!!! Post by: tommys67 on May 30, 2008, 07:41:59 AM As a result of a wicked lowside, I've had to make a ton of repairs (and use the opportunity to make a lot of modifications as well) but just a few things remain until I'm ready to ride again!
I've noticed that the tank is loose - to use a phrase. It latches with the front buckle, but it isn't snug to the frame any more. When I lift the tank up, there is some play in the back hinge. What can I do to fix this? Replace the tank hinge? Tweak the front buckle hook? Nachos? Title: Re: Almost done w/ repairs and mods... but tank is loose!!! Are all the bolts on both sides of the tank hinge tight? Has either side been distorted due to the crash? Title: Re: Almost done w/ repairs and mods... but tank is loose!!! Post by: He Man on May 30, 2008, 08:46:24 AM You did go down pretty hard and i wouldnt be suprised if the tank hinge got tweaked a bit. after i went down on my bike the tank never fit the same again even though everything was true on the frame. It was super tight. I only bolte down two of the screws and safety wired the last one. You can also ajust the plastic nubs on the bottom of the tank. put some lock tite on the screws, screw it in till it fits right, then put your tank down and adjust it. wait for the locktite to dry and then screw it all the way in.
you can probably get away without doing the locktite part, but mine was all jacked up, it was either loosey goosey or tight as balls. If I lift the tank up, there is some "wiggle" in the hinge. I'm thinking I need to replace the hinge, or at the minimum, tweak it. The tank won't go up and down when lifted, so I don't think the holes enlarged. Title: Re: Almost done w/ repairs and mods... but tank is loose!!! No chance you forgot one of the washers is there?? -Only reason I ask, is because I had my tank off over the winter to get internally sealed, and when I remounted it, I initially forgot one of the washer/spacers and it had some wiggle side-to-side....All set after I put the washer on... -If there is some tweakage, maybe try an extra washer?? :-\ |
