A local Bay Area motorcycle forum put together a presentation to the California Highway Patrol and the CA Office of Traffic Safety. As a result, for the last week, these messages have been posted on major freeways during commute hours throughout CA -- from San Diego to San Francisco and farther north. What a great way to reach hundreds of thousands of people. Well done. [thumbsup]

We could really use them here in JERSEY!!
I saw that. Saturday morning too - sportbike hour!
Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
I got such a warm IZ_ feeling ;D [moto]
I thought it was some clever hacker. [laugh]
Good on the folks who got it done! [beer]
Wonder how I can get them to do this around DFW. That's really nice.
Seeing them all over the 405 and the 10 down here in LA. Very cool.
It's nice to see!! Too bad they can't put them on the normal roads, I just got cut off by some jackass in a Ram on Santa Monica and La Cienega today >:(
i filled out some survey on the Cal Trans website basically said "hey thanks" and I got this response:
We are pleased that this educational campaign is receiving a favorable response from many affected users.
These messages, which are scheduled to run through this Thursday, are part of the Caltrans-CHP motorcycle awareness campaign, a statewide effort to improve safety for motorcyclists. In 2008, there were 529 killed and 11,764 injured on California roads. Compare that with 200 deaths and 6,330 injuries in 1998, and you have a 165% and 86% increase respectively.
Thanks again - we appreciate your comments!
It was definitely very nice seeing those signs.. got to give them credit for putting in the effort to get that message out there for the rest of the biking community :)
Great work BARF! [thumbsup]
Although I'm still pissed they didn't go with my suggestion

The problem is, in southern California, most people would just say "duh" to that news.

Ah, that's why these are being posted. I saw it while going West on the 10 last Saturday and was wondering why it was there. Not complaining, but just wondering why they did it. Hope they still have it up in the Summer months when more of us are riding.

It's not kosher to come on this board in "winter" and say the weathers too bad to ride in socal. The snowed in folk get al revolty.
We "snow folk" do get pissy when we have big fat white flakes falling hard outside 8)
I'm just glad my baby is tucked in warm garage at home, patiently waiting. [moto]
Maybe I'll hit up the ski resort this weekend, lots of new snow up at Alta (and still snowing). ;)

beat me to it!! I read the article this morning in the Union Tribune down here in San Diego. Seems that most cagers here were offended somehow by the sign and feel that they shouldn't have to share the road.

One of those killed was a good friend. :'(
I was very, very happy when I saw the signs. Hey...it's using an already existing messaging system to do something POSITIVE when it's not otherwise being used.

all those retirees in san diego is my guess. There's always going to be some percentage of the populace that's going to get pissed no matter what 'they' do.

If I had the ability to hack the billboards, I don't think I'd be so noble as to put up awareness messages. [roll]

Who would be such a douchebag that they would be offended by a safety sign? That's like getting upset about a sign that says wear your seatbelt. make the beast with two backsing tools.
Iowa: House Bill 2351, introduced by Rep. Geri D. Huser (D-Altoona), would require the department of transportation to feature the message "Watch for Motorcycles" on all electronic message boards on Iowa's interstate highways for a four-day period during the month of May 2010, except when an emergency or other situation requires the use of a message board. Also introduced by Rep. Huser is House Concurrent Resolution 105, which seeks to designate the month of May 2010 as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and encourage all Iowa motorists to strive to improve motorcycle safety in this state.
