Post by: DucIt on May 30, 2008, 11:27:55 AM
Some people shouldn't be allowed to play with matches.

The explosion also seems to permanently brighten the room.  8)

the table cloth is undamaged

the foil is still in large pieces sitting on the table

he's not bleeding

he can still see and hear so quickly after a flash bag went off a foot from his face

the fuse never actually burnt

but other than that it's a funny concept and i got a laugh out of it. [cheeky]

Magnesium burns like a flare for a long time, it doesn't explode instantly. Throw some water on it and it explodes into a fireball of incredibly bright light.

Fun stuff.

Plus, Mag doesn't typically light with a match, it needs a hotter flame...

Guess I better be careful with open flame around the Marvics on the SL [cheeky]

You aren't that far off... There were some nasty fires in mid century racecars that used magnesium liberally. Once that stuff gets going you better hope the driver isn't in the car.

Magnesium burning is a class delta fire. Nothing you can do to stop it. It has to burn itself out.

In the Navy, a class delta fire gets jettisoned...

Actually, when moving magnesium blocks hit pavement, brilliant white sparks are emitted.

No fire.

I'll see if I can find a video.

When I was in the Marine Corps I went to a cold weather mountain survival school and we used old magnesium snow shoes. We would take our survival knives and shave some of the Magnesium off of the shoes and use it to start a fire. Worked like a charm.

It just burns real well, Doesnt explode or anything. Hit some of it with your fire starter and it will burn real hot but burns fast so you have to have your kindling ready to go.

i know TI does. I guess it would need to be finer to actually catch on fire instead of just come off as sparks.

old VW's had magnesium engine blocks - way back in the day I used to volunteer at a firestation for free pool & beer and they told us if you ever had to put one out to just use low flow water without the nozzle because the aeration would cause it to flame up/explode

now pure sodium in water - that explodes real nice  8)
