Title: Hope I haven't fried the eletrical system.....
Post by: JamLJJR on February 19, 2010, 01:29:09 PM
So I went out to start my bike this morning, same routine, turned the engine kill switch to the on postion, turned on the key, listened for the fuel pump and relay, opened the choke a little, hit the starter switch and POP. I hear this loud pop, followed by and electrical sizzle. All of the electrical systems on the bike went out, cluster, head light everything. Tried turning the key on and of and nothing, no relay or fuel pump sounds, no starter turn over, just silence :'(. Checked all my fuses they all look good, changed out the ignition relay under seat still no juice. What have I done, have I killed my monster?

Did you check the 40 amp (I think) main fuse near the battery?

It's in an inline holder and is pretty large.

Painter..

The big green one on the right side of the bike, yes it looks fine, havent taken it out of the in line holder just looked at it from the side with a flash light.

I'd check it with a meter or test light.

That, and the main relay are the only two things that can kill the entire system that I'm aware of, and you already changed the relay.

Ok...1997 M750.

Look at the battery cables first.  All 4 of them.

1- Negative battery to the bolt under the air-box that grounds it.  There's also a ground lead that disappears into the harness at that point.  Check that cable too.
2- Positive cable from the battery to the solenoid
3- Positive cable from the solenoid to the starter
4- (often overlooked) Negative cable from the engine case (clutch side, near engine crankcase breather) to the frame behind one of the LH footrest bolts

Also look at the solenoid.  If it shorted out, that could've killed the battery.  Have you ever felt burnt wiring?  It's crunchy instead of being soft...

Tested the large 30A fuse on the side of the battery, everything was fine. I'll check the battery and solenoid cables in the morning. Thanks for the advice painter and Stew.

Have you tested the battery yet?

The 30 amp fuse on the side of the battery is supposed to be a 40 amp fuse.  The 30 amp main fuse could be the culprit too, actually, check all the fuses.  You could have blown more than one.  Also, do what Duck-Stew said.  If that doesn't work out, start checking back from terminal 87 and terminal 30 at the socket the main relay plugs into.  Power goes to 87 from the main fuse and is distributed to the rest of the fuse box when the key is turned on.  Also make sure you have power at terminal 85 when you turn the key on.  From your description, either you blew a fuse or had a connection that was so bad a wire arced and burned.  If you need a wiring diagram you can find one here:

Download the manual for your bike and go to the back of the manual.

Heard the fuel pump?  Have you installed an electric pump

It's Alive!!! it's Alive!!! Checked all the wires like Stew told me to and everything checked out. So I finally sat down and thought about things. Told myself to check the battery it was totally dead, must have drained during whatever power surge the bike experienced. I put the battery on the charger yesterday and waited, jumped out of bed like a kid on Christmas day this morning and hooked up the fully charged battery and nothing  :'(. So I thought to myself I have to be missing something, checked the voltage on everything and it all check out fine. So I said maybe the new relay is bad or the bike doesn't like it.  Put the old relay back in, turned the key and I heard a clicking sound, but no lights yet. turn the key off and on again and the bike came to life, lights on all systems looked like a go. hit the starter button and she roared to life. Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated. I'm gonna changed the main fuse to a 40 Amp fuse today, the fuse that was in the bike when I bought it was a 30 A fuse.

Well, you got it going but never found a problem.  Sounds like you may still have a battery issue.

Just to make sure, wiggle the harness that runs down the head tube while the bike is running and see if you loose power.

Your bike is a single-phase charging system.  The 30A main charging fuse is correct for that bike.  A 40A fuse would be correct for the later model bikes.  DO NOT change your main charging fuse out to the 40A.

Duck-Stew is correct, somehow it was imprinted in my mind you had an '01.

Been riding her all day with no problems, checked battery voltage 3 times, looks good. I'm thinking I inadvertently created some type of surge in her which in turn drained the battery (battery is brand new). I should have checked this in the first place instead of running out and buying a new relay, it would have saved me a lot of grief.  I left the 30A fuse in, thanks again guys. I'll let you know how things go over the next few weeks.
