I've notice over the past few weeks that on highway 80, and on many other highways, the Amber alert signs have posted "Share the Road Look Twice for Motorcyclists". I for one am really grateful for the message and hope that public awareness and respect for motorcycles will grow hopefully reducing the number numbr of accidents/fatalities. I can't say I've seen a real change in the way distracted drivers tend ingnore my small presence, but at least the state (CHP, Caltrans) is doing their part to raise awareness and I think that's pretty cool [thumbsup]. On a different note, when I first saw the signs I wondered what kind of reaction drivers would have - I suspected it the message might piss some people off. Here's an article I found about drivers who are angry about the signs:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/feb/19/sign-of-trouble/ (http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/feb/19/sign-of-trouble/)
I think it's really troubling that people have such a low opinion of bikes that they'd rather not share the road at all.
Wow, that's a pathetic reaction. Maybe the signs should say something like:
"Lane-splitting is legal. Running a motorcyclist off the road = jail."
or maybe:
"Motorcycles average 50mpg. Maybe you should get your fat ass out of the SUV."
All people are retarded. They're just a little more retarded in San Diego.
i for one, am not too big a fan of cal transfat for doing these message boards on the freeways.
two weeks ago, a minivan driver swerved into my lane while reading one of those idiotic message boards ... i looked over at him when passing, and he was craning his pencil neck to read the message board. talk about irony.
God forbid anyone has to tank an extra .2 seconds to look and not kill someone.
I am so glad I rarely have to ride in traffic anymore.
Yup, "real America" has drivers' licenses.
Yep...that's where we're headed.

I didn't even know there was a Highway 80 in California. I'm planning a vacation in San Diego later this year though.

It's
the highway 80. Starts in San Francisco near Zeitgeist, and ends at the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey.

Yep. West and East (x2) then West again. The only time it was remotely interesting was the time a friend and I did it in 48 hours.

Yea that 80, the one that starts in S.F. near Zeitgeist, and goes to the east coast thru Nevada and Wyoming and a few other places is not hwy 80. You are referring to Interstate 80 or I-80 or just "the 80" Interstates are not highways like highway 101 or highway 1.
They are built to a certain standard that is universal along its route unlike the other federal or state highways. (See standards) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_Highway_System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_Highway_System)
Compare with U.S. 80

Ah, nuance. In case you haven't noticed, I'm a blunt instrument. We call it highway 80, so I went there.
"I'm took the 80 across country" <== LA speak
"I took 80 across country" <== Norcal speak
Best part of 80 is that it doesn't go through Texas. I spent the night in Amarillo once. Was surprised when I woke up alive and not murdered the next morning.
