I had this strange thing happen today on my 2003 620 Dark, on a stop-sign "look at me" rev..
It gave me almost a backfire? it didn't rev up, just got almost silent with a little "pop" out the exhaust... scared me, and it happened one more time on my ride today. Bike was around 230 on the oil temp, and i had just gotten gas. I can't really re-create it, but it only seems to happen on a really quick twist of the throttle.. Engine went quiet and it popped out the exhaust, then all back to normal 1 second later..
That's what you get for showin' off. ;D
Seriously...has it done it before or since?
If it had never done it before it could be fuel related.
I know, from reading your other posts, that the bike is somewhat new to you. Any idea of the service history?
Hahah yea :) Should stop showing off...
It's new to me, but it was owned by a guy that took really great care of it... It's had all the necessary services..
I took it into a local Ducati shop and had them to a top-to-bottom look at it, all they could say is that it needed a new chain and new back brake pads...
It's never done this, and only did it twice, could be fuel related I guess considering I had just gotten gas... I looked all over the exhaust for a hole or leak or something, couldn't find anything..
Has 20,650 miles on it. Hope it lasts for 50,000!
If you had an exhaust leak it would pop on decel more than likely.
If it continues you might try some dry gas, or better still a fuel treatment to combat ethanol issues. I always used to say dry gas for fuel issues, but it makes no sense to add alcohol to alcohol.
If that doesn't work it might be something as simple as a TB synch or more involved like a full FI set up.
Good luck with it.
It is most likely pre-ignition from a lean fuel condition.
A lot of stock newer model, fuel injected bikes (mine included) are trimmed very lean to meet emission standards. Because of this, when you twist the throttle up quickly (rev the motor) from idle, or a low throttle setting, you can get a situation where a lot of air and very little fuel goes roaring into the engine for a split second. This super lean mixture hits the burning hot exhaust valve and ignites. The pop you hear through the airbox is the sound of the this ignition as it fires through the open intake valve.
This tends to happen more when the air is cool and dense and the motor has warmed up.
Thanks, this sounds correct...
I'll be able to get the engine hot on sunday, I'll see if it happens again.
This keeps happening... when the engine is hot.. took the bike in for service, their answer was an oil cooler... (not sure it's really needed)
I can re-create it now... but it's not a huge problem, just annoying.

You are more than likely running lean, either from a vacuum leak or the mixture needs to be a little richer. Could be bad gas also. An oil cooler isn't a bad idea, but it is NOT your problem.

dealer just want to make some money selling some stock stuff they got I guess.
I ran up to 23x all the time never had an issue.
do you have the stock ecu?
You may very well need a valve adjustment and a full fueling calibration, meaning trim check, TB sync, etc. I had a bike that would do that crap and rode it for a while thinking it was normal and nothing was amiss but since I'm no longer a noob I have realized differently. Dealer was told about it and didn't do anything so I was left on my own to figure it out. Figure it out I did, adjusted the valves myself(I believe I achieved 0 clearance under the closing shims even), took two weeks to do it, but I did it and now the bike runs as it should. Take your plugs out and look at them. They will give you a clue. Smell the exhaust. If you're lean you need to richen up else there is a slight risk of engine damage. Lean engines run too hot. Coughing through the airbox didn't go away until valves were done at least in my case. Oil cooler? Somebody at your dealer is a dumbass. That or they think you are. These bikes are not space shuttles.
