Title: Bike won't start, Ever seen this before?
Post by: slauster on February 26, 2010, 11:18:41 AM
Hey all,
Having some trouble with my monster

I turn the key, needles sweep, lights flash then this happens...please watch the video. (This is not some gag)
Ducati light problem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND69P-INjaw#normal)

I will hold in the clutch and hit the starter button and I get nothing...no buzz, click, or attempt to turn over.
The battery is fully charged, did that last night. I have checked for corrosion, and have unplugged and plugged in everything i possibly could.
The only mods that I have done are changed the handlebars, and an oil change.  Did i just do something stupid?
thanks for your help in advance

Haven't seen this, but could it be the immobilzer engaged?

Did you disturb the connection to the immoblizer antenna around the ignition switch?

battlecry- I very well could have done that.
If i did it must be the slightest disruption that made it inactive. Nothing was cut or crimped. I will check that out

That looks like an immobilizer code.  What is the blink sequence?

Well, the EOBD light will blink twice and then stay on.  Then the immobilizer light will blink twice and then stay on. Not sure what that all means. I am going to pick up a voltometer and take some readings. maybe that will give me some insight

It could be the immobilizer.  I was filling with gas last year and bike did something similar, I think the car that was next to me must have had some really strong RFID thing.  I had to roll a few feet away from them to start the bike.  Do you have any other car keys or fobs with you?

What year and model of Monster is that?

Recently washed, left out in the rain, or ridden in the rain?

duckb0y- interesting idea. I do wear my keys on my belt but never thought that would be an issue.

Speeddog= It is a 2005 s2r 800. Love the bike, as long as it works! As far as the rain thing here is a little more of the story.

When i first expereinced this problem i had been riding the bike all day long...turning it on and off...(i was shooting the new Russel Crowe movie filmed in PGH so look for it!)  But, It started to rain during filming.  I shut the bike down, changed, took all of 5 minutes, and went to turn it back on and it happened.  I tried to turn it over a few times and by the grace of God it started and i was not stranded in the rain, miles from home.

Then, a nearly a month after i had this first experience it came time to put the bike away for the winter. knowing that I wanted to bring it into the basement for winter projects on the bike i washed it one last time.  I washed it, it turned over, I let it get to temp., shut it down, went to turn it over to pull it into the garage and nothing.  Since then, nearly 3 months now I have had the same issue.  The reason it took me so long to address the problem was 1. time 2. I pulled the front end apart to install suburban machinery handlebars and powdercoat the front end.

So, yes I did wash it.  But, I have washed it before this ever happened and never had a problem.
I am at a complete loss.

Thank you for your willingness to help

Have you experienced condensation inside gauges?  Have you tried overriding the immobilizer using the code on the code card?

No condensation in the gauges at all. I never new I could override the code. I do have all the books and red key for it. I will give that a whirl.

Had similar problem with mine a few years ago....seems the key wasn't in far enough to trip the immobilizer, even though it allowed the startup sequence you show in your vid.  Pull and insert the key a few times to see if it works...
