I am considering getting a new Monster 696. Yay!! I asked one of my friends who owns a ducati if he could let me know of any mechanical issues that he's had with his Ducati in general. While he dosn't own the 696, he does own a 848. Here's what he had to say.

Didn't idle at stops once the temperature got to 104 on the dial (which is standard summer engine temperature). Engine thought it was running too lean, and turned itself off. It can be fixed with $1500 aftermarket exhaust “slip-onsâ€. Not sure if the Monster suffers from this, but the 848, 999, 1098, and 1198 do…"
So I guess I'm asking if the Monster suffers from this.
I've read some posts about overheating and not to sure if this is something I should be worried about. I live in Vancouver and while it's dosn't get scorchingly hot, there will be some weeks of 30 Celcius weather in the summer. Is this something I need to worry about or am I just making molehills into mountains?

You will not have a problem. Plenty of riders live in Arizona and handle the summers. There is an optional oil cooler if you are really worried, but you would need to be moving to get the benefit as there are no fans on the 696. I live in Chicago, and the summer can be hot and humid, and I never had an issue with ANY air cooled motor. Manufacturers would not make air cooled cycles that overheat to the point of failure. Plenty of testing has been done to ensure this will not be a problem. Failures are usually due to poorly maintained bikes, poorly tuned engines or no oil.
Your friend is wrong..sorry. Full exhaust or slip ons will likely cause the bike to run hotter. This is especially true if the bike is not tuned correctly as the bike would be running lean.
I wouldn't worry about it. I used to have an 848, and it stalled on occasion with the stock pipes and ecu. It didn't always stall though...only every so often at a stoplight. It also only did it after the temp reached 200 degrees, not 104 (which is the lowest temp the gauge will display). Like your buddy said...slip-ons and the race ecu fixed the problem.
I haven't heard of any stalling issues with the 696...just the SBKs. No FHE though. None of my 2V air-cooled Ducs (like the 696) have had stalling issues. I've never had an overheating issue either.

His friend isn't wrong. The Termi slip-ons or full exhaust for the 848 come with the race ecu, which gives the dealer more control to adjust things, solving the stalling problem that the SBKs are known for.

Hmm, I was going to go this weekend and take the bike out for a test drive, but I completely forgot that I leave this Saturday for my vacation! Thats how much the 696 has been in my mind as of late. :)

+1 on the oil cooler if you are seriously concerned.
When you say 104.. is that F or Celsius? My gauge doesnt read anything below 120F on my monster. If its Celsius, thats about 234F yes? These engines are designed to up up with alot. Air cooled and water cooled engines temp readings will be different for their normal ranges.

Yes, I would imagine that would be Celsius as we live in Canada. I didn't think about that. Sorry. 104C is about 219F.

I had a 696 before upgrading to 1100S. 696 was running cooler WITHOUT oil cooler than 1100 with oil cooler. Outside temp in Qatar now between 77-88F and Im getting 4 bars (276-320F) on the indicator. On track (95F outside temp) I got up to 5 bars (321-347F) on the indicator. Im confused that oil temps are higher with oil cooler.

400cc might have something to do with it. ;)
