Title: steering damper suggestions
Post by: muskrat on March 01, 2010, 07:26:32 PM
a while back there was a Scott's damper without the mounting kit so it put me out of price range.  well, saved some cash and now I want one damnit!  suggested ideas should come from the well informed please.  Lastly, I don't want one on the outside of my bike tied to the frame on my 06 S4R

Thanks for helping.

ive had the bitubo from bellismoto on my list of things id buy for my monster if i had the money to.

i dont like side mounts for a simple reason. if ur bike goes down on that side, the dampers done.

check it out. it gets good reviews and well priced. the matris ones are much more expensive and i dont know if its worht hte extra cash.

your suggested damper looks great but GPX has the coolest.  I might call them in the am

Do you mean the GPR?  How does that thing mount on a monster?

don't get matris.  the problem with matris is that they pulled the distributorship from department of suspension and i yet to find a place that is authorized to service one of their steering dampers.  an email to the italy email address does not help at all they are totally and completely useless.

go with a named brand like arrow or ohlins or anyone else that is more known..  i have a matris damper set and though it works fine it is starting to sliglhtly leak and there is no way to fix it its basically slowly becoming a good paperweightl.

to clarify (as he did in the original post but who reads the original post...), 'skrat is on a S4r, so anybody thinking of suggest an under-triple mount (like I was about to) would be mistaken - no room with that radiator there. Its either on the top triple, or on the side.

Thus, I would suggest at this point, if you have the scratch, a Bitubo gas damper:

(desmoworks (http://www.desmoworks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_354&products_id=65))

The top mount Arrow is slightly cheaper, but isn't gas, its oil (still good though).

Arrow Damper at Desmoworks with top mount (http://www.desmoworks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_355&products_id=83)

For your color scheme, the GPR damper comes in black/red ano, looks nice, but is the most expensive of the bunch, and I'm almost certain its not gas.

This past weekend I thought I needed a damper while I was on the track. $500? Maybe I don't need one so badly.

Execept when you need it.

If i had a damper that time my bike threw me off...yea would of saved me about $600 bucks. but then again i might still crashed anyway.  >:(

not to pit war between sponors, but bellismoto has the same one (their picture appears with a differnet mount) for much lower price. though i dont know if its an older model or a differnet model all together.

Wasn't sure if it was the same, I know there are different models, and different mounting configs.

For the record, I have the ohlins under the lower triple (Motowheels setup). I like it, but I got a 68mm damper, and the Monster can actually use a longer stroke damper - the 68 is better for superbikes with even less turning radius, the longer the stroke, the further your bars swing.

I might eventually replace with a Bitubo gas unit, but dollar wise, what I have works enough to not warrant spending more.

I too was considering the Bitubo. But, does anyone know if a damper like that available for HYpers is available for monsters?

You mean like the Arrow that Arrow has no kit for, will not service and will not even sell me a replacement?

what ever you do, dont get a Bitubo side mount.  Their engineers dont have the measurements correct on the frame diameters.  Mine was installed professionally (like that is hard?) and almost caused a major wreck.  It resulted in a very badly scratched frame.

blech.

I have the Matris and love it.

yeah I did  [bang]
I've seen them in pics but have no clue how they mount and did see one on a Motard personally and liked it.
