Can anyone give me advice on the 2008 695 model? It's in perfect condition with about 3k miles, marving exhaust. It's $5,400. Is that a good price? Does this model have any particular issues that I should be aware of? Would that money be better spent on something else?
also, what are the most important mods I can get? I don't know anything about ECU stuff, etc. What can I do to maximize the power? It has dual headlights too.. not sure if I like that. I'm willing to trade for a stock headlight and flyscreen.
most important mods you can do to a 695 are replace the forks and shocks... I have S4 forks and an ST2 shock and it made a huge difference on mine.
I'm not sure about the price, since I haven't been in the market for a while - so hopefully someone with some more relevant experience will pipe up.
As far as tech issues - From the factory 695 were set lean to make the emissions regs. This meant they tended to run hot, and cause some discoloring of the cylinders. Folks have fitted fuel adjustment gizmos (like a power commander) and some in hotter areas have fit oil coolers.
You should have a look at te tank for signs of swelling. The plastic tanks have had a nasty habit of growwing bigger over time. Common signs are that the tank will not buclke down in front, or is very close the the key way. Also look at the rubber blocks on th bottom of the tank where it should touch the frame - some times the tank expands widthwise and those block no long line up on the frame.
But for almost all intents, the 695 is a near clone of the 620. Base suspension as noted, and the front brakes are not the hottest. But there's been folks who have reported a pad swap on the front brakes improves them a lot with a minimum of cost.
The 695 has a really nice geometry, it's comfy and controlled, but the stock suspension is lacking (although it works semi-bad if the rider is less than 150lbs). It's a great first bike.
As mentioned, check the tank for deformation. Look at the bottom bumpers to see how they line up with the frame and the at least ~25mm space that should be between the ignition and tank clasp. The bike should have a 5 year emissions warranty that covers the tank. Check the engine to see how the paint on the horizontal cylinder is doing. It might be good, or you might see the discoloration, either way its aesthetics mainly.
In terms of power increase, the bike needs richer fueling (via ECU reflash or replacement or...if you don't want to spend on that right away, get the FatDuc O2 manipulator for $70) especially because it has the Marvings already. With the ECU done, you can chop the airbox and get some power. I think a lighter flywheel on the 695 is a nice power add as well.
The price doesn't seem too bad, but I would absolutely rather have an S2R for that much. Unless this is your first bike, if you're looking for power, better to go with the S2R and get the single sided swingarm as part of the package. Those have thine powa!
What color is the 695?

Piller isn't new- Just ain't been round these parts for a bit.
But that does beg a question P - why a 695, and not something with some more juice like a 1000?
I'd say the most important mod was the 14T front sprocket and open airbox/ecu/slip ons. FWIW, the 695 mil has plenty of pop for me. It's totally ridable in the city, and I've been riding bikes for years (read: it's not just for beginners).
Price seems steep
how about this bike?

And when you say an s2r has more power, is the 800 that much more power? Would the 1000 s2r be too much bike? Is the 1000 that much heavier?
The 696 run a bit warm too - some folks have been fitting oil coolers - but not reports of discoloring to date.
Brakes are better, suspension is similar. As far as folks know, the tank won't expand, so there's a problem avoided.
696 has very similar power numbers to the S2R 800.
Is the S2R 1000 how much heavier than which model?
In terms of power from the monsters, S4R/S>M1100>S2R1000>M696>S2R800>M695---->Just my opinion
RE: power - don't let your ego get in the way (that's not to say that everyone who prefers a bigger bike is egotistical). I went from a Hayabusa - which trumps all bikes mentioned on this thread in terms of power - to the 695 and have plenty of fun.

just to clarify, < means "less than." might want to revise the above [cheeky]
Hey, Piller. Good to see you. There's been a dearth of midget hooker pillion stories on the board in your absence. I hope all is well.

oooooooooooooooops [bang]
You know what I meant.
Well I got the 696 695. Thanks for all the input. looked everywhere for an S2R, and couldn't find one - I figure I'll really love this bike anyway.
I'll be looking for stock mirrors and headlight, in case anyone has them.
Broke up with the GF for a couple days over it, all the pictures are off the walls, all the furniture is taken apart getting ready for her to move out. A chair, lamp, sunglasses and picture frame are broken.
But I have the bike.
Wait what!?
Are you serious!?
The 696 is awesome, don't downplay it. I love that bike and I think it's killer good.
Glad you got the bike, not sure about the GF (the end result might be good or bad, I have no clue).
Get a 14T sprocket, clip-ons, chop the tail and core the cans. Those are the major mods you just are gona need/want.
I meant 695, sorry.
It has clip-ons. I hate them! Why are they an important mod? I can't see shit in those mirrors. I also don't like the dual headlights. I want to get the stock headlight, and the stock windscreen. I never did like the look of clip-on's and dual headlights. Anyone else agree?
Im with you on the twin lights never liked them!
return her to her original you wont regret it.
As for clip on's I went totally the opposite wide Protaper bars upright and cumfy.
I too was looking for a S2R no one wants to part with them it seems
so Im staying with my 695 such a fun easy bike to ride set up the suspension and
its is a great bike.
Ah shame about the GF [bang] but as they say
"girls are like buses there will be another one
along any minute now" ;D
Now we need some photos
now
and
later

Pics please.
I'll get pics soon.
So... I went out to get my owners manual from my car to see what the blinking light on the bike is all about, and I thought I'd take a closer look at the gas tank. It looks like it has expanded - the rubber guides line up at the front, but splay out toward the rear of the bike. Also, it's very difficult to get the clip on and off to lift the tank because the ignition is so close to the tank.
so then I got back on here to search for the subject, and I saw the top sticky note is devoted just for this problem! Pretty discouraging. I haven't read much about the issue, but by the way it looks it's no small issue. What do I need to do?
just joined the group, bringing the bike in for an inspection - maybe tomorrow.
That sticky post should have the info you need. Hopefully they get you a new tank.
As far as mods - it's all personal preference. Some like clip ons that are super low some don't. In other cases people got them so they could just have a greater ability to adjust the bar angles. Do what you want. If that's normal bars - go for it. There's plenty of options there for height, sweep, color and more.
For your headlight there's a couple after market options, or just sourcing up an oem. Its not hard to find oem ones on eBay.
About the only one or two I think are actual must items are changing the gearing. Either with a smaller front sprocket or larger rear. And getting the suspension set for you.
Beyond that it's your bike to enjoy. So get to it!
well I know the bars are not original, not sure how they're different. I'm not sure if anything else has been changed. I'm bringing it to the dealer, maybe he can point out all the changes.
It does have a belly pan, I like the look of that.
Piller, I think the clip-ons are a great mod for the 696/1100 because of the different geometry those bikes have from the pre-2009 monsters. Personally, I also don't like the clip-ons for the 695, but I was responding to your typo about the model, apologies for the confusion.
If you joined Ducatiz's "gas tank group", he will help you get started. Since the tank is covered under warranty, I would recommend bringing it to the dealer as soon as possible to get the ball rolling in getting a new one. I was able to get approved for a warranty replacement through my dealer in FL. Chances are the new one will deform as well, but maybe, just maybe in the near future DNA will man up and really fix the problem with a proper recall and different replacement.
Congrats on the bike! I love my 695 like a family member!
Here's my mod suggestions for the bike in order of my personal preference of importance and return in performance or aesthetics (I have done all of these to my 695):
1) Tail chop (the beer tray is just terrible looking)
2) Chop/core the exhaust cans (stock setup is so quiet I found it embarrassing. Make sure you start up and go for a short ride with no exhaust cans at all, you will probably never forget how gorgeous sounding the desmo is with no constraints)
3) 14T front sprocket (this will transform the 695 due to the fact that it already has a large 48T rear sprocket, you might get some vibrational harmonics generation, but the bike will be peppy, smooth and much quicker on the acceleration)
4) Get the FatDuc and set it at the halfway point
5) Replace mirrors (the stock ones just suck, nothing more to say about that)
6) Replace the turn signals something better (monsterparts has mini turn signal pairs for $15, I got them and love 'em)
7) Chop the rear wheel hugger (I never would have guessed how much this improved the look of the bike)
8) Take off the side panels (they are lame and cover nice trellis frame)
Other mods I like for the 695 that I have not done yet:
1) Replace ECU (DP ECU or PCIII), chop airbox and replace exhaust cans with something sans catalytic converter
2) SSS mod (this is a big one)
3) Replace suspension with stuff from S4R's and ST4's.
4) Lighter flywheel
5) Rear seat cowl
6) Replace the axle adjustment plates on the swingarm since the stock ones are only there to frustrate and confuse
7) Chop the belt covers and front sprocket cover
8) Paint the engine black
Sorry for repeating some of those suggestions from my previous post. Nice score, hope you love the bike. Abuse and thrash it, it likes it.
Thanks for the input. This bike has marving cans, a new bar and mirrors, and I'm sure other stuff I haven't discovered yet. I need to have an experienced duc owner go over it and tell me all the mods that have been done on it.
I took it out to get inspected, and driving it around was surreal. It's been so long, I feel like I've never rode a bike before. I'm afraid of things like the wind blowing me off, or accelerating too fast and falling off the back.
Take your time - it'll come back. It's just like riding a bike... bwaa bwaa bwaa...
