Title: interesting comparison
Post by: Raux on March 06, 2010, 10:58:19 AM
ok, although this may be about parts for sale, it's more about perception of value

just look at the price differences for the same part. although i think one is new and one is used.

OK, maybe I am just ignorant on the subject, but I have to ask, WHAT THE make the beast with two backs!?!?!?!?!?! $3000 for a gas tank!?!?!?!?!

Yeah, I think you are seeing new OEM vs Used salvage pull.  Regardless, that is a rather striking price difference.

The 2nd one does have the fuel system... But yeah, it's pretty shocking. But the 2nd guy with the new tank isn't insane. As He Man notes, OEM prices on a tank are astronomical.

Another really common example of this is cans. For a DSS monster, OEM replacement for one is around $800. So $1600 for a pair... yes about the cost of a nice pair of slip ons for one OEM junker. Typically once can find a take off pair that are almost new for $50.

I guess that doesn't surprise me a whole lot considering the dealer quoted me $1100 for a Brembo front rim. Thank goodness for used parts.  Really though, $3000 is more than I paid for my whole bike.
