Title: How much clearance is needed between controls and tank? (Rizoma bars)
Post by: stopintime on May 31, 2008, 12:52:58 PM
I have SpeedyMoto risers and love them. To achieve even better angles for my wrists, also for the elbows to be nicely tucked in, I'm considering the Rizoma bars which have somewhat of a sweep back. I believe the risers might eliminate the need to adjust the steering stops unless there is a "rule" that says clearance MUST be so and so.

If anyone knows the answer to this narrow question I surrender and conclude: DMFers know everything [thumbsup]

the general rule is, so it doesnt touch and is comfortable at full lock for you. I have mine set at 2cm from the tank. which is enough room for me to manipulate the controls at full lock.

I have about 1/4". It gives me a little better turning radius than how it came from the factory...

when i did my clipons, i had them almost tight, and i pulled the bars all the to the steering lock and placed my hand between the bar and whatever it would hit first.  i got the vortex non adjustable ones, so i didnt have to worry about setting anything except the clearance between the bars and the rest of the bike.  i honestly didnt do any "real" measurements, but they feel great, and i dont feel that they are any bit off.

Beers are on me [beer]  thanks guys

So the rule is no rule, just common sense?
I thought there could be some extra clearance needed to avoid denting the tank if dropping the bike.

Next thought: will the sweep cause problems with tight hoses or wires? Yea, I know - common sense ;)

It shouldn't, but double check your clearances with the bike running before test riding it...

I don't know if its right but the distance I am using for peaceful street use with stock bars is about 1 inch.  I simply place my palm on tank and bring the handle bar to my hand.
