Title: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: Yellow Meanie on March 14, 2010, 11:23:55 PM After my recent West Coast ride, I've realised I really need a tinted visor of some sort.
I've always just worn my sunnies under a clear visor. Because the sunnies are polarised, they can make the road surface look "abnormal". It's a bit hard to explain, but sometimes a nice, clean, dry road can look: normal, wet, slippery, gravelly, shiny, dull... So, while picking up some oil and a filter today, I had a look at visors. I can get black tinted, or Iridium in chrome, gold or red. What is the vision like out of each? Are some darker than others? Which reduced glare the most? I assume the Iridium visors will scratch a little easier - will I have issues with bug splat? Thanks all ;D Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: Betty on March 14, 2010, 11:31:33 PM Because the sunnies are polarised, they can make the road surface look "abnormal". Sorry can't help, as I have polarised sunnines as well I have just resorted to wearing none and squinting through a clear visor. Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: loony888 on March 14, 2010, 11:33:56 PM iridium sucks, looks good new but the coating is on the outside and chips up and looks shit very quickly. expensive too!
the darkness of the tint usually depends on the brand of helmet you own, from my experience AGV are the darkest by a long shot, others all all close. paul. Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: mattyvas on March 14, 2010, 11:44:07 PM Yep have to agree with Loony there.
I have an Iridium one for my Arai, biggest problem I find is that when the sun is in your face you can see your own reflection on the inside of the visor and it's a bit disturbing. It does get rather 2nd hand quickly, I am only using mine at the moment cause I'm too cheap to buy an new dark tinted one. The dark tint is pretty good on the Arai, I will buy a new one shortly. In full sun I can't ride with a clear visor and sunnies, I have a pair of yellow lens perscription glasses that I wear under any visor. Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: Nickati on March 14, 2010, 11:52:27 PM Yep have to agree with Loony there. Yes Matty I'd find it disturbing also, seeing your reflection in my visor would scare me !!! [evil] I have an Iridium one for my Arai, biggest problem I find is that when the sun is in your face you can see your own reflection on the inside of the visor and it's a bit disturbing. Only joking [thumbsup] My sunnies are also polarised so I just leave the visor up. Kaz tried them all on at the bike shop and went the light tint and has found this even OK when it's dark. Like all of these things I suppose that there will be a compromise somewhere... Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: Spider on March 15, 2010, 12:25:25 AM I agree, the light grey seems to be a good 'all-rounder' and isn't that bad at night!
Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: heatherp on March 15, 2010, 01:29:43 AM I have a pair of non-polarised Bolles just for riding with a clear visor. I rode with someone last week with the Iridium visor and he was too scared to clean all the bugs of his visor as he reckons you can only clean them in hot soapy water as all other methods scratch them shit.
Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: Betty on March 15, 2010, 09:02:42 AM Does anybody know for sure the legalities of the light tint visor at night? ... I have my suspicions.
Although rarely intentional we do find ourselves caught out at night occasionally (as opposed to knowing we will be out at night) ... I was just wondering ... Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: Two dogs on March 15, 2010, 10:50:10 AM AFAIK any tinted visor is not permitted after dark.
I use a iridium on my Arai and dont have any problems with it , I just take good care of it and keep two Chux in zip lock bags in my jacket one is soaked in glass cleaner the other clean for any little accidents with bug splatter. As i commute home at night I use a pair of clear lense safety glasses for visor up time Luckly I havn't seen my reflection on the inside and keeping my face hidden is probably a good idea as it would scare the kiddies [laugh] but it is also good for that stare down [evil] with the cager at the lights who just cut me off [bang] Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: CairnsDuc on March 15, 2010, 01:36:38 PM I had an Iridium Visor, it is good, but as mentioned has to be treated very gently, I switched to tinted visors
on my Shoei's (Darkest they made) and was happy with them, you could be a bit rougher when cleaning them and fine scratches, marks and stone chips did not show up as much as the Iridium would. I used to commute all the time with the Tinted Visor on and as Dez suggested, carry a pair of clear safety glasses and just lift the visor, I used to keep a pair under my seat just in case I got stuck at work until after dark. I picked them up from bunnings for about $10 Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: signora monster on March 15, 2010, 02:21:12 PM Does anybody know for sure the legalities of the light tint visor at night? ... I have my suspicions. Don't worry too much about the legalities. If we worried too much about the legalities, certain Monsters wouldn't even make it out of the garage. Ahem, exhausts, rego tubes, fender eliminators, ahem....... [roll] 8) "I wear my sunglasses at night"....... Its very easy to clean, I just soak a microfiber cloth in water & the bugs just wipe off (even if I don't clean it for a week), & then use another dry microfiber cloth to dry the visor off.
Cant say that I've had any reflection problems with the iridium vs clear visor. Maybe it depends on the brand of helmet as the visors could be made to different specs between the various brands? Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: brimo on March 15, 2010, 05:16:58 PM Iridium visor, scratches very easily, however they are good for at least an extra 2-3 km/h top speed.
What you really should get is one of these. http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=19437.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=19437.0) Best pics are on the most recent pages. Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: loony888 on March 15, 2010, 09:53:56 PM years ago with my shoei, this is when i only had a bike, i had a yellow "rain" visor on as it was raining when i left for work, on the way home after dark i got pulled for a licence/rego check and due to my smart mouth about being harassed was issued a ticket for using a "tinted" visor after sundown. any tint/colour is illegal after dark, at least here in qld it is.
the wet cloth or paper towel method as mentioned above is the best way of removing bugs etc without scratching but it's not always possible half way through a ride unfortunately. paul. The bloke in the shop reckoned it would be darker then the Iridium ones.
And the black visor on black helmet also matches my black jacket, pants, boots and gloves... It certainly doesn't cut out as much sunlight as my sunnies, but at least I don't have "spooky vision" anymore. Went to Joe's Garage tonight and knowing I'd be riding home after dark, I took some yellow safety glasses. The copper who pulled me over tonight didn't say anything about the dark visor either [cheeky] He pulled me over for not having a tail light. No fine, just a "self clearing" defect ;D Title: Re: Visor - Tinted Vs Iridium Post by: heatherp on March 16, 2010, 01:14:12 AM I am proud to confirm that Nickati is NOT the proud owner of Budgie Smugglers.
