Recently aquired monster S4R, stock except a Apravic (drunk) exhaust.
The bike will idle, but trying to rev it other then gently stalls the bike out.
I've located the idle set screw, but have read mixed reviews on using it to set the idle. Should i? Or should I just fiddle with the idle adjustment all the time via the left handgrip?
Also, what temperature should I use if I were to adjust the screw? Does it matter?
EDIT: 05 S54, 3700 miles, stock except for the slip on.
The bike is NOT under warranty.
I have basic understanding of mechanics. I won't do my own valve job, but general maintenance isn't a problem. (taken from "tips for posting in tech"
What rpm is it idling at?
Do not adjust the idle stop screw at this time.
It tends to shake a bit at or below the 1k mark.
Edit:
let
me clarrify what I mean by 'it will idle'
It won't idle at all without modification to the idle control switch until it gets to about 165 degrees. Upon reaching g that temperature, it will idle very rough, and aggressive take offs will stall the bike. Gentle take offs will as well, but randomy. When I say take off, I'm referring to throttling up, I'm not stalling the bike lol.
Basically, I dot feel comfortable riding around town without the throttle control at least partly engaged due to stalling at intersections at red lights.
Hope that helps
Normal idle is in the range of 1100-1200.
Much below that and it is prone to dying when you crack the throttle, as you can testify...
Try adjusting the air bleeds first.
Back them out a half a turn and see if it helps get the idle up.
If that helps but you need more, go another half turn or two.
Do both of them the same.

Heh, good thing I ased first, as neither of those screws were the one I was gonna touch.
Thank you for your input and especially the pictures, I will let you know the end result later on today!
Edit: is there a certain engine temperature I should be doing this at?
And lastly, what's the reasoning behind needing to do this? Is it common for these screws to screw out of place like this? I picked up the bike with 2700 miles on it, the log says it had it's 600 mile check up but the dealer could not confirm that as they are not the shop that did it.
The exhausts do have a bit of effect.
Possibly not all that well adjusted from the factory.
And who knows what the previous owner(s) did...
Adjust them with the engine warmed up, at least 160 degF on the display.
I adjusted it at 160d, idles nice now, no shut off on abrupt throttle movement anymore either.
I'm still new to bikes, so should it be able to start and idle without manipulation of idle control when the engine is cold?
Also, to access those two screws, there were two plastic "plugs" I accidently destroyed, do they need to be replaced?
It will likely need some adjustment of the fast idle control to stay running when it's cold.
Try to only use enough to get it to idle at 1500 rpm or so until it warms up.
The plastic plugs are not necessary.
