Just got done with opening the airbox and PCIII'ing the S4. I took it for a ride yesterday and looked down between the key hole and the tank and realized I could see my k&n underneath. I know multiple people have mentioned that the bike is fine to ride in the rain with the open airbox but anyone have any views on leaving it parked in the rain with an open airbox. i don't have a garage so that isn't an option btw.
The airbox has a drain.
When I drilled my 900s airbox I left the front section alone for just that reason.

good to hear guys, thanks, I like the full open box as is right now with the filter element just strapped down.
Bike covers are pretty cheap. Just let the pipes cool down before you drape it over the bike.
Never had any issues with my airbox after being parked in the rain on many occasions.
You can get the partial stretch covers that just do the top 1/2 of the bike. Light weight; easy to pack and will keep any rain away from the open airbox. Mine has been rained on heavy any number of times at work; open airbox, no bike cover. Turn the key and it starts every time.
The only trouble I've had with a totally open air box is riding through torrential rain. Rain so hard that you can't see the road. After about 30 minutes of that my engine flooded. :-[

I've had the engine stutter a few times but i've never entirely flooded it.

Sputter out on the side of the road and jam the starter until it fired up again. Then I sat there reving for for about a minute to try and burn off some water and continued on my soggy way.
I've been in regular "hard rain", but not what erkishhorde's been in - completely open airbox and no troubles. I'm not a fan of riding in the rain, but i've had no problems with either the open airbox or the open clutch.
