I had my left radiator fan seize up solid on me a couple weeks ago. I just installed a used, but working fan (I tested it!), from the exact same make, model & year as my bike ('07 S4RS). I also just got stuck in atrocious traffic, where my Temp soared to 247 F.
Neither fan EVER came on?! It got to the point where it wasn't even reading Temp, but just flashing “HIâ€, so I shut her down and pushed her!
I was told the fans on the S4RS are controlled by the ECU, with the left one coming on first, then the right one if things should get hotter. I've got a full Termi system with the DP ECU. Can anyone tell me what could possibly be the problem, before I disconnect everything & run a separate line and mechanical switch???
Thanks in advance!
I don't have a service manual for the s4rs, but I'm curious if there might be 2 temp senders...one for the dash and one for the ecu/fan switch. I can only remember one off hand, but I could be wrong.
Check the relay and see if it's functioning. Run a 12v+ signal to the turn on side of the relay and see if you can get the fans to run like that. You are just tricking the relay into thinking the ECU is turning the fans on.
If the fans do run, the ECU isn't sending a signal, which could be a faulty temp sensor (if there are 2). If it doesn't turn on, you found the problem (relay).
Hope that helps. [thumbsup]
blown fuse? The motor pulling locked rotor amps may have blown the fuse, or something you did when installing. Was the right motor coming on when the left was locked up?
One fuse protects both fans. Did you check the fuse?
Yes, idiotic of me not to check the fuse! The left fan was seized up solid, I'm sure it blew the fuse. Checking it today, I'll let you know how I make out.
Thanks!
OK, 10 Amp fuse blown! That's probably at least part of my problem. Does anyone have any experience with either the mechanal over-ride switch kit, or the Evoluzione lower Temp sensor for the fans, specific to a 2007 Monster, S4RS??
I've gotten contradictory stories on here as far as this? Will the switch feed a bad ground signal to the ECU, fouling things up? Is there a lower Temp sensor for my specific model? I also heard that the S4RS doesn't use a sensor, that it's all dome through the ECU?? Shouldn't the ECU be receiving Stats from a sensor though??
Again, any Ducati mechanics out there??
Thanks Guys!
so you replaced the blown fuse and they still don't come on?
Didn't get a chance to check it yet, it's pouring rain here right now & if I run her in my garage long enough to get hot, I'll asphyxiate myself, but I'm sure the fuse knocked out the fans. The left one was frozen solid to the point where I couldn't even get it to turn with my hand. That will blow a fuse for sure! I'd still like to get some Info on the manual switch & lower Temp sensors though!

The ecu requires a sensor for input. It can't read the engines mind.
There are two sensors shown in the pdf parts file. They are the same part number, so I doubt there is a lower temp sender available from Ducati. One apparently is used for the gauge and one for the ecu.
DP, Here's a link to a lower Temp sensor: http://www.motowheels.com/italian/myproducts.cfm?parentcategoryid=1218%7C748%2F916%2F996%2F998%20Superbike&productID=2220&showDetail=1&categoryID=1316 (http://www.motowheels.com/italian/myproducts.cfm?parentcategoryid=1218%7C748%2F916%2F996%2F998%20Superbike&productID=2220&showDetail=1&categoryID=1316)
I'm just curious as to whether it's aplicable to my bike or not? '07 S4RS.
It says, "Model specific, only for the 998", but if I'm not mistaken, that's my motor?

You are correct. The 998 also used the Testa motor as did the 999.
I checked the 998 pdf file and it uses the same sensor as your S4RS. The difference is the location and the 998 used a different type unit for the gauge. Because of that difference the motowheels wiring supplied may not adapt the sensor to your harness.
If you're that concerned I'd try the motowheels unit knowing you might have to adapt your bike's wiring.
I think you're over thinking the situation because of the defective fan though.
I hope you're right DP! It was just really disconcerting though, to see the Temp soar above 248 F in traffic, have to shut her down & push her! Besides replacing the fan & fuse, I have also cleaned & lubed the plugs & sensors and if it ever stops raining here, I plan on going out again. I'll make it a point to let her sit & see what happens. If the fans don't bring the Temp down, I'll have to opt for the $50 buck sensor.

My 996 routinely sees 250+ temps waiting on the hot pit in the summer.
It has no fans and it's never boiled over.
That CAN'T be good for the motor though!
That's why I opted to shut her down & push her. The traffic was only moving ten feet at a time anyway, so it wasn't any big deal.
I'm just used to better engineered things I guess, that perform the way they are supposed to!? I don't think ANY motor should overheat under those conditions, but then again, I had no fans operational?!

i don't think it harms it at all...but that's me. Is it optimal...no way.
I don't think your bike suffers from an engineering fault, just a simple part failure.
..and your engine didn't overheat. It didn't boil over or lose any coolant. The ecu will shut the engine down when the temp reaches a dangerous level. You chose to preempt that.
Like I said...I think the fan failure has you a bit freaked.
As long as there is no cavitation (boiling) or boil over the engine won't mind.

You hit the nail right on the head DP! Thanks for helping put my mind at ease!
Now, if it would just stop raining, so I could go for a ride and check out my repairs!
