1. Lawrence of Arabia

This list excludes anything Pixar, Star Wars, or Indiana Jones, because really, those all go without saying, they're some of my favorites.
Hard for me to make a list like this, it seems to change every few months. Close nominees were Casino Royale, Watchmen, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Sleepy Hollow, The Departed, Apocalypse Now, and many others.

Raging Bull
Millers Crossing
Mad Max
Goodfellas
The Big Lebowski
I've got others, I can't squeeze it into a Top 5, maybe a Top 10. :-\

Man, already a couple of Avatars. Maybe its just me but while I enjoyed that movie a lot because of the imagery and what not, the plot was sooooooo unoriginal and acting really not that great.
I like Sleepyhollow, Apocolypse Now and Zombieland a lot too ;D
"Avatar" will be the "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" of this generation.
It's all gimmick. Either that gimmick will take off and be the new standard (like sound in film in the late '20s), or it will fade away the way 3D did in the '50s. Either way, "Avatar" will fade from memory. How many people watch Jolsen's "The Jazz Singer" or "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" today and say, "Wow! What a great film!"
If "Avatar" does have "legs" it will be with the fanboy types normally associated with Star Trek conventions and rubber pointed ears. That is, people who really, REALLY want to live there and don't want reality to stand in the way.
boondock saints
fear and loathing
hangover
snatch
big lebowski
i avoided hangover because of the hype when i finally saw it was not that impressed till i watched it again, and again , and again and kept getting funnier my all time favorite comedy.

The only reason I put Avatar was because of how visually amazing it was. While I don't think the rest of it was horrible (wasn't great) I do think it was visually groundbreaking. Takes some creativity to make that much detail. I can still remember the first time I saw The Matrix and I think I'll remember the first time I saw Avatar for a long time.

It's neat to hear when people are particularly touched by new technology like you were. Personally I too was underwhelmed with the story/plot, but found the construction of the film to be amazing. Unfortunately though, I don't think that it lived up to the hype. The future of filming however, will owe a lot of acknowledgement to the new pioneering techniques used in Avatar.

I have not seen the movie, however, I have read the book, and thought it was good. Depressing, but very good.
An absolute best 5 is an impossible choice for me, so I further restricted myself to (a) no genre repeats, and (b) enduring because of being a quality standout within its genre. That's still hard, but:
1) Blade Runner
2) The Shawshank Redemption
3) The Big Lebowski
4) Up
5) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
And a bonus shout out to:
6) Black Rain
...just because I happened to think about it, and it's fun, has some depth underneath the action, has motorcycles, and, hey, Ridley Scott!

4. Das Boat
5. Love actually (yea it's a chick flick but what the hell)
I'd like to have The Worlds fastest Indian is my honerable mention. I'd by a ticket to watch Sir Anthony Hopkins make a sandwich.
There are so many great films it really is impossible to rank them down to just five, or ten, or even one hundred.
Plus, I can never think of them all when asked, so I defer to AFI's Top 100.
Some of my picks from that list:
The Godfather
Casablanca
Lawrence of Arabia
Wizard of Oz
The Searchers
Sunset Blvd.
On the Waterfront
Chinatown
Double Indemnity
Apocalypse Now
Maltese Falcon
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Dr. Strangelove
King Kong (1933)
Rocky
Netwrok
African Queen
Unforgiven
Shawshank Redemption
The Apartment
Spartacus
Sophie's Choice
Blade Runner
Some not from the AFI list:
Public Enemy
The Red Violin
Bobette's Feast
Mrs. Miniver
The Three Godfathers (that's one movie; not the three different Godfather movies)
Stagecoach
Rio Grande
Red River
One, Two, Three
Sweet Smell of Success
Cool Hand Luke
Hud
The Road Warrior
The Elephant Man
off the top of my head...
amelie
grail
citizen kane
slap shot
big fish
Another couple that I would add to my list would be:
Runaway Train
American Graffiti
I keep on thinking of more every day, but these are movies that I would watch all the time & never get old. ;)
Also...
The Italian Job (not the remake, but the one with Michael Caine)
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
The Little Shop on the Corner
Destry Rides Again
Johnny Guitar
Just about everything from Pixar
Just about everything from Billy Wilder

usual suspects
grand prix/le mans/bullitt/vanishing point/gone in 60 seconds/le rendesvous (add them all together and you'd still have a crap film, but the cars... the cars... I call this my sandra bulloch vote, totally BS but screw you, it's my vote, i'm not telling you how much i got paid to make it)

I get it, the dude was emotionally distraught, broken... he just seemed too much of a whiny pregnant dog and it got annoying real quick... sitting through all of that just to get to what turned out to be a good ending was tough for me.
spoiler-ish content...
*and I don't mean the controversial... interaction... between the characters. I mean the scene as a whole, and how everything unfolds was really quite good.
