Ive stumbled over here from Oz Monsters. Attracted by a practical mod. And this is where my trouble lies and hopefully here is where my help may come from.
So hi all and let me explain my troubles:
So the second mod I ever did to my 696 was to remove the tail and put in a Comp werkz fender eliminator. Cosmetically the best thing Ive done to date. Practically, well maybe not so. Unfortunately I ride every day (or fortunately). And well the wet days with no fender gives me a wet ass. Not comfortable or attaractive. Now I dont expect to avoid the rain, just the wet road. Or more the wet on the road that's finding its way up the rear tire and onto my back.
So winter appraoching, weather shittening, Im thinking of ways around this (without putting it back on). Im thinking perhaps a custom CF rear hugger, a few inches longer than the stock. What are you lot with chopped tails on this rainy board doing for such predicaments.
Soppy But.
see if you can fab up a fender like the new multistrada, someone else here was thinking of putting it on their 800. looks better than a giant carbon one wrapped around the entire wheel

For over 40 years I've been flexing my vocabulary muscles by using "shit" and forms of "shit" as nouns, verbs, adjectives, but never in this way!!

haha. If you know, met or ever spoken to an Aussie, youd appreciate how we love to make up words or bastardise the bugger out of it). Oh and "bugger" means something completely down here.
Im lovin the multistrada concept DucatiTorrey. Wonder where I could get one and or what it looks like on the monster.
Just what I was going to say, "welcome to australia!"

;D. (Sorry
Wolfie).
Bahaha. Thats insane. Looks like he backed into a billboard and its gotten stuck to the tail. mahahaha. Sorry, dont mean to laugh, but wow!
invest in some quality rain riding gear! worth every penny!
Done that ;D. But I dont want to get around in wet weather gear just cause the road is wet. Its gets super humid down here in summer and that wet weather gear aint the most comfortable gear to wear when its hot & sweaty out.
I feel you man...i have the same problem here in Manila,no other way around it except that i don't go fast on wet roads.sucks!
Try fabbing a small piece that matches the size of your license plate but extends about 3" or so from the bottom, tapering from the width of the plate to about half the plate width. You might have to make a couple until you find the minimum lenght to get the coverage you want. Easy to install when the weather looks bad and remove when it looks clear for a while. Can be either plastic or aluminum.
Shiiiit. That might be the winner right there JetTest. [thumbsup]
Easter weekend, time to get out the tools and toys and get fat on choccies. There is a god!
If you make the part that goes under the license plate fit just between the plate mounting bolts you can install and remove it just by loosening the bolts, you won't have to remove them all the way. It will clamp between the plate and mount.

This is a great idea. I've often considered trying it since i've removed my hot dog tray. And this idea, quick install and removal, is just brilliant.
i feel for you and the swampass.
I feel your pain! Or wetness?
I have a 2001 Monster 750, which I bought used last year. The previous user did the standard tail chop which looks great, but I get showered every time the roads are wet. I've gotten to the point where the back of my helmet was covered with shite and the back of my collar was soaked.
I also have a 748 and after some observation I had a brilliant idea: I'll put the license plate holder from the 748 on the monster as a mud guard.
The work is relatively easy to perform, the 748 mud guard is held in place with 3 screws and has a hole for the cables, so I made 3 holes at the end of the plastic board (I can't remember its proper name) under the seat for the screws and one for the Monster's cables. Then I attache the license bracket from the 748 and voila'!
... well not really. This solution has 2 flaws, one is that the plastic board under the seat flexes under the weight of the 748's bracket (with license plate, turn signals, etc). The other flaw is that it only protects me from part of the spray.
The solution is to fab a metal bracket that will hold up and extend the 748's license plate holder. The metal bracket is be held in place by the two screws at the end of the monster's frame and the 748's mud guard bolts right into it.
I'll post some photos as soon as I get a chance to. I'm sure they would help explain better the whole idea.
Cheers!
Buying a 748 to fix my wetness is a bit excessive ;D ;D ;D.
Please send pics, Im intrigued in what you are trying to explain. The rains are here!!!
maybe it's just me. but if you have issues with getting wet with short tails... go back to stock. anything you make up won't look as good.
I actually have one I cut from a piece of black ABS about 1/16" thick, slips in and out under the lIcense plate with no tools. In and out in about 10 seconds, works great, only there when I need it and carries easily in my backpack.

I bought the bike with the tail already chopped. And it looked great that way. It only became an issue for me when I started riding in the rain.
Anyway here are the photos of my fix.

The metal bracket that I put between the 748 licence plate/mud guard and the Monster's frame is still somewhat crude. I plan to work it with my Dremel to cut off unnecessary parts and smooth out the corners.
I'm very satisfied with the end result though, here's a photo of what it looks like.

And yes I know it's "license" and not "licence" but I'm not going to go back and fix the images.
You could get a plastic dealer plate off a car, turn it sideways and zip tie it to the bottom of your motorbike plate. Drill holes accordingly. (this works in my head at least)

When you and your wet bum get a ticket from the Upholders of the Right coz you're offending the
Victorian NSW motoring public with your anti-social water-spraying activities, you can put the proceeds of that sale towards paying off the fine [laugh].
Sorry. I'm just feeling superior coz I still have my stock tail-piece ;D.

And I thought the whole idea of the tail-chop was to remove all of that plastic permanently attached and hanging below the back of the seat.....

Well... you're right it kinda is. But if you kept all the stock components then, should you find yourself riding in a climate where its constantly raining, you could refit for some rear-end weather protection....

aaaaaaaaaaahahahaha i was just thinking that, looking at those pics ;D
What about this thought; Have a piece metal or plastic (same size as license plate) that mounts to the back side of your license plate to the two lower screw holes in your license plate with bolts and wing nuts. When you get stuck in the rain you remove the metal/ plastic piece and flip it around and remount it, so you would be lengthing the license plate. Kind of like a mud flap attached to the plate. Not sure how much it would help but it might.

Personally I'm a firm believer in the less-is-more faith. If you look at my bike you can see I've taken off the side pods, rear hugger, seat cowl, crank case breather and belt covers. And if I could I'd get rid of turn signals, lights, mirrors, exhausts, speedo, etc... I'd be happy to.
The tail chop definitely looks better and cleaner than the 748 plastic I put on, but this is the best compromise for me so far. Attaching a piece of metal or plastic to the license plate when it rains and then taking it off might work, but it's not my kind of fix.
Cheers, and keep the good ideas coming.
And I was really not trying to be critical. If you give 5 guys the same problem you will get 5 different solutions, most of which will have merit.
How about a rain suit?
Just get one of these ... I mean, lets face it - either way you are accepting defeat [laugh]

um.
no.
Gawd thats ugly.
A) its a scooter
B) Its a car
C) seriously what is that!!!!???
The plastic piece which is size of license plate is winning me thinks. Easy. practical. And only ugly in the wet. lets face it, who looks good wet anyway. Actually don't answer that.
