Title: Back in bidness - Carbon came home
Post by: Slide Panda on June 01, 2008, 08:20:41 AM
After a smattering of bad luck, like busting an oil leak right after I brought her home from a 24K service, and an out of whack idle that caused my oil light to flicker a bunch...  I finally got the carbon monster home for the season.

Might be a little silly - but i missed having my bike around.

Now I just have to get back in ride shape...

Wow. That is a lot of bad luck.  Glad you'll be back in the saddle.

Was the leak a result of the service?

Nope.  The leak was not related to the service work at all.

The leak was between the main engine case and the alternator cover - back by the clutch slave.  Apparently it's not at all uncommon to develop a leak there over time - and my bikes headed into it's 9th year.  Dry clutch bikes with their heavier clutch pull are more prone to it.

Around the time I was coming up to my 24K my clutch slave seals had started to weep fluid, which may well have help degrade the seal.

So just a series of ill timed bad luck hassles.

My idle was well out of spec (too low) which resulted the oil light firing off in a flicker when the bike was hot and at idle - which is when you're oil pressure will be lowest coming from the pump.  Low RMPs = Lower pressure (dur) and Hot oil is thinner = lower pressure.  The idle was brought up to the 1100-1200 mark which is spec and no more flicker.

Not silly at all...Its one of the first things I have to go look at when I get back home from being out of town! (at least not silly to me...)

Indeed - though I need a little time to work the rust of my skill set and get the riding specific muscles back in tune.  So I won't be up for any epic trips just yet... but soon.

Agreed. Not silly at all. Especially in this forum. I have a picture of mine next to me right now...
