Title: metal to plastic tank conversion
Post by: beatcat on March 29, 2010, 06:37:39 PM
hello all---ok---got a new undented plastic tank from sean (thanks man!) but my 02 monster 620 dark has a metal tank and it looks very different. I spent the last two hours searching through the threads here and what I got was this----I will need a new tank mount--easy enough, I will need a fuel pump assy to plug the hole ($150--yikes) and I will probably have to cut new lines to plumb this out right. is there anything I should know here other than I should have bought the right f-in tank?? sorry if this has been answered before--I just can't find the right thread here.

BTW--My plan is to fix the steel tank and put it back on---I just can't bear to not be riding her for the time i will need to spend to get this done right.
thanks for any responses and guidance!!
jason

you need a new fuel pump, once you have the new fuel pump, you should save yourself the trouble and get a quick disconnect on the line because IIRC, the metal tank uses a wireclamp to hold the tube while the plastic tank has it all neatly tucked into a nozzle that has a convenient disconnect ( that is unfortunately 1 time use only if you arent careful).

Youll also need a new mounting tab.
other then that, it should fit right on. I have the opposite thing as you. A plastic tank that i fitted a steel tank on to. I just need to fix the dent.

A complete fuel pump/flange assembly for a plastic tank is ~$1000 new.

You will need the quick-disconnects that are used with plastic tanks also.

'02 M620 has the fuel pressure regulator mounted on the throttle body assembly.
You'll need to bypass that, as the plastic tank setup has the FPR in the fuel pump/flange assembly.

Well---this is great advice---I was hoping for "just get a $5 flange from home depot and you're good!" but what fun would that be. I guess the $150 used fuel pump is pretty reasonable as compared to $1000, eh?

I might be getting in over my head for this considering I might be putting the metal tank back on eventually. I'll keep looking for new posts though---thanks gents!!!

go wit the metal tank, you can still use magnetic bags and no possiblity of the dreaded expanding plastic tanks.

i've been wanting to get a s4r or soemthing but they all have the newer plastic tanks, i have been thinking of buying a newer monsterand then switching my metal tank from the 620 with it so that i can still have the metal tank and put the plastic on the older bike, wonder if that is doable?

do yourself a favor and sell the tank and get yourself the right metal tank.

might take some time, but less headaches in the long run.

I dodged a bullet on buying a plastic tank for my dark 620 last week thanks to Ducpainter.  Some one outbid me at the last minute and I couldn't have been happier.

I would just send your tank to DP and have him fix and paint it.  I will be next winter.
