so i've been noticing a very slight squeak when i apply my front break. Almost like metal on metal. i was wondering if it is time to change my break pads? the bike (new ish) have 5,000 m iles on it. its not a grinding. and it seems to almost come from the back??? when i apply my front breaks and am rolling to a stop

Take a look at your pads - you should still be able to see pad if there's some left. I had a similar issue, and took it to a shop to double check and they showed me that I still had plenty of pad - it was just dust.
I've got nearly 30,000 miles on my stock pads!!

yeah i thought they would still be young. That is crazy though. I'll take a look.
The pads will have a groove cut in them at the factory. IF you can still see the groove, then the pads are not ready to be replaced on wear concerns. Unless you were racing on them, I would think your stock pads would go way longer than 5k miles.
Though, it's not uncommon for some noise from teh brakes - you might no have a problem at all - just normal operation
It has been my experience with brakes in general (unless in wet conditions) that most squeaks are caused by the back of the pad against the caliper/piston. If it persists, it really bugs ya, and the rotor and pads are still ok, I'd remove the pads and put any of the commercially available "disk quiet" coatings on the back of the pads (designed to dampen vibrations) and reinstall.
